Sherrill Post 230pulled off a come-from-behind win thanks to a Ryan Chevier grand slam in the fifth.

Two solo homers put Love Post on top of Sherrill Post 2-1 through five innings of District 5 American Legion play on Tuesday.

One Sherrill home run erased the deficit and then some.

Ryan Chevier belted a goahead grand slam in the bottom of the fifth frame to put Post 230 up 5-2 en route to a fourth straight Sherrill win.

“We’ve been waiting for it,” Sherrill Post 230 coach Barry Van Dreason said of Chevier’s big hit, grinning. “He’s ready for playoffs. We know he can hit the ball.”

Post 230 starter AJ Farina struck out seven batters five innings of work, his only blemishes the two solo homers. Reliever Jorden Barlow pitched two scoreless frames to secure the win.

Chevier finished the evening 2-for-3 with the homer, three RBI and a run scored. TJ Horodnick added an RBI triple on 2-of-3 hitting for Post 230 in the victory.

Love Post starter Alex Gay- lord yielded three runs in four innings on the mound in the loss. Reliever Ethan Martin allowed two runs across three innings of relief.

Sherrill missed out on a solid run scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first. Albro led off with a double, Rotach followed with a single, and Zach Nell chopped an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. After Gaylord got the next Post 230 batter on a strikeout, Albro tried to tag for home on an Alex Kipp fly ball to center but was called out on the play

at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Love Post took the first lead of the contest on a Austin Olesky solo homer in the top of the second.

Post 230 had another bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the third. With Horodnick on first following a single, Zach Nell drew a walk and Blake Van-Dreason reached on a hit-by-pitch with two outs. Gaylord bounced back to retire the final batter of the inning to preserve Love’s advantage.

Sherrill scratched its first run across in the bottom half of the fourth. With one out and Ryan Chevier on first, Horodnick smoked a triple to the outfield fence, scoring Chevier for a 1-1 ballgame.

Love wrested the lead back half an inning later when Sean Banks led off the top of the fifth with another shot over the Noyes Park fence for a 2-1 Love lead.

Post 230 made its move in the bottom half of the frame.

After Tyler Rotach reached on an error at second base, Nell induced a walk to put a pair of runners aboard and chase Gaylord for reliever Ethan Martin. Martin came in and retired the next two Post 230 batters before Vinny Leibl drew a twoout walk to load the bases. After coming away empty from bases-loaded situations in the bottom of the first and third, Chevier made sure it did not happen again, belting a grand slam for a 5-2 Sherrill lead.

Barlow spelled Farina in the top of the sixth, throwing two scoreless innings to ensure the 5-2 Post 230 win.

“These kids want to fight, hate to lose,” Van-Dreason said of his team heading into playoffs. “We’re right where we want to be pitching wise.”
