19th-cen­tury ‘Peo­ple’s Sculp­tor’ has unique style

Ques­tion: I bought this ce­ramic sculp­ture 20 years ago at an auc­tion. On the base, it reads “The Fa­vored Scholar.” On the back is “Patented April 1, 1879.” On the top of the base is printed “John Rogers, New York.” I paid $300.

Since I am­mar­ried to a James Rogers, I would like to know about the sculp­tor and the piece. Can it be
