One of the most in­tel­li­gent sci­ence-fic­tion movies yet made, di­rec­tor Robert Wise’s 1951 clas­sic dou­bles as a cau­tion­ary tale about nu­clear war. Michael Ren­nie is su­perb as a hu­man-look­ing alien who lands in Washington, D.C., with his trav­el­ing com­pan­ion: a metal­lic robot that can dis­in­te­grate weapons with its laser ‘eye­sight.’ Pa­tri­cia Neal and Billy Gray ( Fa­ther Knows Best) play earth­lings who be­friend the vis­i­tors.
