Boca’s Jarman, Lake Worth Christian’s Culhan earn state awards

Two Palm Beach County volleyball standouts earned b i g p o s t s e a s o n h o n o r s Wednesday.

Boca Raton senior Christine Jarman and Lake Worth Christian senior Jenna Culhan were named the Florida Dairy Farmers’ Class 9A and Class 3A Players of the Year, respectively.

They were among nine players and nine coaches who were named individual class fifinalists in voting conducted by a statewide panel of high school volleyball coaches and prep media representatives.

One player and one coach will be chosen Miss Volleyball and Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year. The winners will be announced Wednesday.

Jarman, who has signed with the University of Alabama, helped lead the Bobcats to the Class 9A state championship. She fifinished the season with 340 kills,

digs, 77 service points and 27 blocks.

Culhan, who has signed with Liber t y Universit y, recorded 476 kills, 464 digs, 32 blocks and 62 aces. The Defenders advanced to the Class 3A state semififinals.

Football: Berean Christian football coach Brad Carney has resigned after six seasons with the Bulldogs, he confifirmed Wednesday.

Carney, who was 33-28 at the school, fifinished 4-6 this season after posting consecutive 8-2 fifinishes.

The Bulldogs were Sunshine State Athletic Conference division champions in 2014 and 2015, and qualifified for the playoffffs in both seasons. Berean fifinished third overall in the league this year.

Carney cited a desire to spend more time with his family as his reason for stepping aside.

“My stepson Jared Hamm o n d g r a d u a t e s f r o m Berean in May,” said Carney, who works for the Palm Beach County School District Police. “I would like to be able to enjoy that.”

Carney began coaching at Berean as an assistant in 2008 before being promoted to head coach in 2011.

Carney said he would consider coaching elsewhere in the future.

The school will begin a coaching search shortly, Carney said.
