BOYNTON BEACH — A Palm Beach County sheriff ’s deputy shot a woman before killing himself Thursday morning at Boynton Beach’s Inlet Harbor Club, authorities confirmed.

City police officers responded to the gated community off Federal Highway north of Gateway Boulevard shortly after 8 a.m.

They found the deputy, who has not been identified, dead and a woman in critical condition. That woman, who also has not been identified, was rushed to Delray Medical Center’s Trauma Center, according to police.

Palm Beach County sheriff ’s authorities as well as Boynton Beach police were at the scene of the shooting.

Police did not say when they would identify the deputy or the injured woman.

Police first indicated that identifications would be withheld until next of kin were notified. Later, a spokeswoman said the shootings remained an active criminal investigation and those involved would not be named until detectives completed “all necessary interviews and investigative follow- ups.”

More than 12 hours after the incident, police released another statement signaling that identifications won’t be released until today at the earliest.

“During the course of our investigation into today’s shooting, information presented itself that requires further examination by detectives,” the statement said. “We anticipate releasing the names of the parties involved upon conclusion of that inquiry.”
