4-time champ Italy out of World Cup
Four-time champion Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades after losing its playoff to Sweden 1-0 on aggregate. They played to a goalless draw Monday in San Siro. Sweden advanced to its first World Cup since 2006.
This will be only the second World Cup missed by Italy. The first was in 1958. The last major competitions Italy failed to qualify for were the 1984 and 1992 European Championships.

Skiing: French skier David Poisson, who won the downhill bronze medal at the 2013 world championships, died Monday following a training crash in Canada. He was 35.
Tennis: Former star Jelena Dokic said from a young age her father would pull her hair, spit in her face and yell vile insults. Dokic, now 34 but once ranked No. 4 in the world, writes of her ordeal with Damir Dokic, also her coach, in an autobiography to be released this week. Damir Dokic is living in Serbia and had no comment . ... Grigor Dimitrov beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in his debut at the ATP Finals in London.
