Jets name Bates offensive coordinator

The Palm Beach Post - - SPORTS -

The New York Jets promoted Bates from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, replacing the fired John Morton. Bates will continue coaching quarterbacks.

■ Former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel says he’ll participate in the developmental Spring League in Austin, Texas, which will play from March 28 to April 15.

■ Fox Sports will broadcast the NFL draft this season, along with the NFL’s usual television partners of ESPN and NFL Network.

Tennis: Roger Federer, 36, is two wins from claiming the No. 1 ranking for the first time in six years. He defeated Ruben Bemelmans 6-1, 6-2 in just 46 minutes at the ABN AMRO tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Federer will replace his old rival Rafael Nadal at No. 1 if he reaches the semifinals at the indoor tournament. By achieving the feat, he would also become the oldest topranked male player. Andre Agassi holds the record, at 33 years, 133 days old.

Soccer: Morgan Brian and Rose Lavelle return to the U.S. women’s national team after dealing with injuries last year in preparation for the SheBelieves Cup next month. Brian, in France playing for Lyon, will not take part in training camp in Orlando but will be available for the final SheBelieves Cup roster.
