Aquarius & Pisces birth mates gather for 23rd cel­e­bra­tion

Seven ‘di­a­monds’ - per­sons 90 or older - at­tended the event

Forty-nine Aquarius & Pisces birth mates gath­ered on Sun­day, Feb. 12, for a cel­e­bra­tion at the Taber­na­cle Com­mu­nity Life Cen­ter in Peters­burg; the youngest cel­e­brant was 6 years old and the old­est cel­e­brant was blessed with 97 years of se­nior­ity. For an af­ter­noon of fel­low­ship, tributes, din­ner, and re­mem­brance, there were 104 per­sons in at­ten­dance.

Hostesses and hosts were Angela E. Greene, Angela Har­ris, David Gayles, Charles Ulmer, Ciara Han­son and Paris Jae Bowles.

Among the af­ter­noon’s high­lights was recog­ni­tion of seven “di­a­monds” (per­sons who have cel­e­brated 90 or more birth­days); the recog­ni­tion was pre­sented by Doris H. Ri­d­ley, mis­tress of cer­e­monies.

Di­a­monds present were El­nora Perry of Sutherland, Pauline Har­ris, Wil­lie Stevens, Esther Sykes, and Ger­tie Wil­liams of Peters­burg, Hen­ri­etta White­hurst of Glen Allen, and Bessie Moorer of South Ch­ester­field. Di­a­monds were re­cip­i­ents of spe­cial gifts, and a mu­si­cal trib­ute was ren­dered by Rita Tali­a­ferro.

In ad­di­tion, recog­ni­tion in honor of veter­ans was given by Frasier Brick­house; Rita Tali­a­ferro’s trib­ute to veter­ans was done in song. Four­teen veter­ans were present and re­ceived cer­tifi­cates de­signed by Eve­lyn Avery. A me­mo­rial wreath was on dis­play, con­trib­uted by Doris H. Ri­d­ley, in mem­ory of her hus­band, John J. Ri­d­ley (Korean & World War II vet­eran) and in mem­ory of her brother, James An­drew Howard Jr. (World War II vet­eran).

Re­mem­ber­ing the life and legacy of 2016 de­ceased birth mates (Dr. Vi­vian Rogers Wil­liamson, Eloise Jack­son-Moore, Doris Emma Blount, & Dr. Nor­ris Jerome John­son) was done by Rosa L. Man­son.

The open­ing prayer and grace were de­liv­ered by Rev. Dr. Re­becca Branch-Grif­fin, pastor of Oak Street A.M.E. Zion Church, Peters­burg. Vo­cal tal­ent was shared by Ky­ron Tucker of South Ch­ester­field.

A sit-down din­ner was pre­pared and served by Gar­rett A. Ma­son & As­so­ciates; ta­bles were adorned with flo­ral cen­ter­pieces cre­ated by Otelia Greene; and other ta­ble ac­cents were cre­ated by Karen P. Hughes of North­ern Vir­ginia.

All Aquarius and Pisces birth mates were rec­og­nized by co­or­di­na­tor, Doris H. Ri­d­ley, and Ruby Car­ring­ton; and gifts were given to birth mates, as well as their guests. Gift pre­sen­ters also in­cluded Ciara Han­son, Paris Jae Bowles, Charles Ulmer, and David Gayles.

Birth mates rec­og­nized for unique con­tri­bu­tions were Dave Lig­gons for his po­etic writ­ings and Wil­liam M. Cosby Jr., for lyrics for the Aquarius and Pisces birth­day song.

The Aquarius and Pisces birth­day group ac­knowl­edges its founders for their con­tin­ued ef­forts — Wil­liam M. Cosby Jr., Irma T. Hen­der­son, Burton Hayes, Doris H. Ri­d­ley, and Ger­tie B. Wil­liams.

Ad­di­tional ac­knowl­edge­ments in­clude: Thelma Brown (pho­tog­ra­pher), and Karen P. Hughes (scarves for hostesses).

As the cel­e­bra­tion con­cluded, a read­ing en­ti­tled “Hugs” was done by An­nie Mick­ens and Valen­tine’s cards and hugs were shared. Rita Tali­a­ferro led birth­day cel­e­brants in singing the “Aquarius & Pisces Song”.

Clos­ing prayer was given by An­nie Mick­ens.
