Aquarius & Pisces birth mates gather for 23rd celebration
Seven ‘diamonds’ - persons 90 or older - attended the event
Forty-nine Aquarius & Pisces birth mates gathered on Sunday, Feb. 12, for a celebration at the Tabernacle Community Life Center in Petersburg; the youngest celebrant was 6 years old and the oldest celebrant was blessed with 97 years of seniority. For an afternoon of fellowship, tributes, dinner, and remembrance, there were 104 persons in attendance.
Hostesses and hosts were Angela E. Greene, Angela Harris, David Gayles, Charles Ulmer, Ciara Hanson and Paris Jae Bowles.
Among the afternoon’s highlights was recognition of seven “diamonds” (persons who have celebrated 90 or more birthdays); the recognition was presented by Doris H. Ridley, mistress of ceremonies.
Diamonds present were Elnora Perry of Sutherland, Pauline Harris, Willie Stevens, Esther Sykes, and Gertie Williams of Petersburg, Henrietta Whitehurst of Glen Allen, and Bessie Moorer of South Chesterfield. Diamonds were recipients of special gifts, and a musical tribute was rendered by Rita Taliaferro.
In addition, recognition in honor of veterans was given by Frasier Brickhouse; Rita Taliaferro’s tribute to veterans was done in song. Fourteen veterans were present and received certificates designed by Evelyn Avery. A memorial wreath was on display, contributed by Doris H. Ridley, in memory of her husband, John J. Ridley (Korean & World War II veteran) and in memory of her brother, James Andrew Howard Jr. (World War II veteran).
Remembering the life and legacy of 2016 deceased birth mates (Dr. Vivian Rogers Williamson, Eloise Jackson-Moore, Doris Emma Blount, & Dr. Norris Jerome Johnson) was done by Rosa L. Manson.
The opening prayer and grace were delivered by Rev. Dr. Rebecca Branch-Griffin, pastor of Oak Street A.M.E. Zion Church, Petersburg. Vocal talent was shared by Kyron Tucker of South Chesterfield.
A sit-down dinner was prepared and served by Garrett A. Mason & Associates; tables were adorned with floral centerpieces created by Otelia Greene; and other table accents were created by Karen P. Hughes of Northern Virginia.
All Aquarius and Pisces birth mates were recognized by coordinator, Doris H. Ridley, and Ruby Carrington; and gifts were given to birth mates, as well as their guests. Gift presenters also included Ciara Hanson, Paris Jae Bowles, Charles Ulmer, and David Gayles.
Birth mates recognized for unique contributions were Dave Liggons for his poetic writings and William M. Cosby Jr., for lyrics for the Aquarius and Pisces birthday song.
The Aquarius and Pisces birthday group acknowledges its founders for their continued efforts — William M. Cosby Jr., Irma T. Henderson, Burton Hayes, Doris H. Ridley, and Gertie B. Williams.
Additional acknowledgements include: Thelma Brown (photographer), and Karen P. Hughes (scarves for hostesses).
As the celebration concluded, a reading entitled “Hugs” was done by Annie Mickens and Valentine’s cards and hugs were shared. Rita Taliaferro led birthday celebrants in singing the “Aquarius & Pisces Song”.
Closing prayer was given by Annie Mickens.
