Con­sider the vari­ables:

How long will you be gone? What will the tem­per­a­tures be like? Hot weather, for ex­am­ple, will not only mean you’ll need ex­tra flu­ids, but could cause cer­tain snacks to melt. Will you need uten­sils? Any type of tool to ac­cess the food, such as a can opener?

Opt for non-per­ish­ables:

While you can pack per­ish­ables if you have a cooler or ice pack, this added weight makes light­weight snacks like trail mix, nuts, en­ergy chews, jerky and gra­nola a no-brainer.
