Randolph College removes statue
LYNCHBURG — Virginia’s Randolph College has removed a statue of a Confederate soldier on campus.
President Bradley W. Bateman said in a statement that the statue of George Morgan Jones was taken down Friday following a decision by the executive committee of the Board of Trustees.
Bateman says Jones was a generous donor to the school and the first person to suggest to its founder that the Woman’s College be located in Lynchburg.
Bateman says it was important to remove the statue before it possibly turned into a public dispute that would’ve “posed a very real risk to the physical safety” of campus.
