T hey recognized the problem in the community. They determined their needs to better serve the community. They worked together for a viable solution. They got a positive result!
On Tuesday of this week, the police and fire departments of Colonial Heights and Petersburg held a joint press conference. The departments are teaming up to fight the heroin and opioid epidemic in our communities. With the help of Richmond-based Kaleo Pharmaceuticals, our local police and fire crews are now better equipped to save lives.
Often police are first on scene and in many cases limited in their ability to administer aid in cases of overdose. Often an officer is first on scene with EMS mere minutes behind. Those precious seconds could mean the difference of life and death to an overdose victim.
Now equipped with 800 units of the auto-injector system called evzio, an officer on scene can administer aid to a citizen when fire and EMS are not immediately available. The injector also provides aid to the officer should they come in contact with these drugs.
The press conference was typical of our emergency service personnel. Their main concern was the protection and betterment of our citizens. Limelight was not a comfortable place for the speakers representing each department. Their only focus was on public awareness and safety. We applaud them for their integrity and commitment.
Again, they recognized the problem in the community. They determined their needs to better serve the community. They worked together for a viable solution. They got a positive result! Oh and by the way they were able to do all this without personal agendas, political statements and grandstanding.
The last line was inserted to remind a few area elected dysfunctional officials that this is a first class example of how to be a selfless public servant.
The men and women of our local police, fire and rescue follow an honorable creed. They risk life and limb to ensure others maintain theirs. They will not call themselves heroes but we will.
Thank you all for your service!
