SFC (Ret.) Ulyssee Ben­son, Sr. de­parted this life on Mon­day, Au­gust 27, 2018, at Com­mon­wealth Se­nior As­sisted Liv­ing Cen­ter of Ch­ester­field in North Ch­ester­field. He was born in Pick­ens County (Town of Cen­tral), SC, to James and Al­berta Mat­ti­son Ben­son on Au­gust 7, 1938. Ulyssee was the sec­ond of nine chil­dren.

In 1960, Mr. Ben­son en­listed in the United States Army where he served 21½ years. His mil­i­tary ten­ure af­forded him the op­por­tu­ni­ties to travel to Ethiopia, South Africa, France, Korea, Ok­i­nawa, Ja­pan, and sev­eral mil­i­tary in­stal­la­tions in the United States. He also was flu­ent in four dif­fer­ent lan­guages to in­clude: Ja­panese, French, Ger­man and Amharic. While cul­ti­vat­ing the art of cook­ing Mr. Ben­son ac­quired the po­si­tion of Culi­nary Ad­vi­sor in Ger­many. Af­ter re­tir­ing from the mil­i­tary; he con­tin­ued his em­ploy­ment with the gov­ern­ment work­ing as a civil­ian within 42½ years.

Fol­low­ing the demised of his wife Carolyn (whom he was mar­ried to for 30 years), he con­tin­ued the busi­ness of selling Mary Kay Prod­ucts.

Mr. Ben­son was a de­vout ded­i­cated Chris­tian of the Rock Church of Petersburg, hav­ing served on the Me­dia, Greeters and Ush­ers Min­istries. He was a bib­li­cal scholar through­out his earthly walk with Christ of­ten re­flect­ing through scrip­tures that brought en­cour­ag­ing and up­lift­ing words to those he met.

He was pre­ceded in death by his first wife, Bar­bara Bean Ben­son and his sec­ond wife, Carolyn McNeal Ben­son; par­ents, James and Al­berta Mat­ti­son Ben­son; and three sib­lings, Dave El­lis Ben­son, Mamie B. Mills, and Oba­diah Ben­son.

SFC (Ret.) Ulyssee Ben­son, Sr. leaves to cher­ish pre­cious me­mories to: his two sons, Ulyssee Ben­son, Jr., (Honor) and Kim Ben­son (Ver­lene); two daugh­ters, Jil Bean and Tonya Delph (Tracy); two grand­chil­dren, Fa­timah Ben­son and Leah Delph; sib­lings, Ben­jamin Ben­son (Anna) of Anderson, SC, Charlena Gaines (James) of Seneca, SC, Alice B. Glover of Louisville, KY, Esau Ben­son (Mary) of Mt. Hope, KS, and Pearl B. Reese (Ray) of Seneca, SC; adop­tive spir­i­tual chil­dren, Min­is­ters Nathaniel and Paula Neal; and a host of nieces, neph­ews, cousins, other rel­a­tives, co-work­ers, church mem­bers and friends.

Mr. Ben­son of­ten quoted, “Good things come out of ev­ery­thing that hap­pens, even though it may not seem like it at the time”. He truly will be missed.

Ser­vices will be held at 1:00 P.M., Satur­day, Septem­ber 8, 2018, at the Rock Church of Petersburg, 2301 County Drive, Petersburg, VA, Pas­tor Bill Smalt, eu­lo­gist. In­ter­ment to fol­low at Blandford Ceme­tery.
