ULYSSEE BENSON SR.
SFC (Ret.) Ulyssee Benson, Sr. departed this life on Monday, August 27, 2018, at Commonwealth Senior Assisted Living Center of Chesterfield in North Chesterfield. He was born in Pickens County (Town of Central), SC, to James and Alberta Mattison Benson on August 7, 1938. Ulyssee was the second of nine children.
In 1960, Mr. Benson enlisted in the United States Army where he served 21½ years. His military tenure afforded him the opportunities to travel to Ethiopia, South Africa, France, Korea, Okinawa, Japan, and several military installations in the United States. He also was fluent in four different languages to include: Japanese, French, German and Amharic. While cultivating the art of cooking Mr. Benson acquired the position of Culinary Advisor in Germany. After retiring from the military; he continued his employment with the government working as a civilian within 42½ years.
Following the demised of his wife Carolyn (whom he was married to for 30 years), he continued the business of selling Mary Kay Products.
Mr. Benson was a devout dedicated Christian of the Rock Church of Petersburg, having served on the Media, Greeters and Ushers Ministries. He was a biblical scholar throughout his earthly walk with Christ often reflecting through scriptures that brought encouraging and uplifting words to those he met.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Bean Benson and his second wife, Carolyn McNeal Benson; parents, James and Alberta Mattison Benson; and three siblings, Dave Ellis Benson, Mamie B. Mills, and Obadiah Benson.
SFC (Ret.) Ulyssee Benson, Sr. leaves to cherish precious memories to: his two sons, Ulyssee Benson, Jr., (Honor) and Kim Benson (Verlene); two daughters, Jil Bean and Tonya Delph (Tracy); two grandchildren, Fatimah Benson and Leah Delph; siblings, Benjamin Benson (Anna) of Anderson, SC, Charlena Gaines (James) of Seneca, SC, Alice B. Glover of Louisville, KY, Esau Benson (Mary) of Mt. Hope, KS, and Pearl B. Reese (Ray) of Seneca, SC; adoptive spiritual children, Ministers Nathaniel and Paula Neal; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, co-workers, church members and friends.
Mr. Benson often quoted, “Good things come out of everything that happens, even though it may not seem like it at the time”. He truly will be missed.
Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Rock Church of Petersburg, 2301 County Drive, Petersburg, VA, Pastor Bill Smalt, eulogist. Interment to follow at Blandford Cemetery.
