Leathia Mae Point, age 80, en­tered into eter­nal rest on Thurs­day, Au­gust 30, 2018, at South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter in Petersburg, VA sur­rounded by her fam­ily.

Leathia was born on May 3, 1938, to Charles Henry and Avie Gra­ham Smith in Colum­bus County, NC, where she was ed­u­cated and a grad­u­ate of Ar­mour High School in Riegel­wood, NC. Dur­ing her high school years she was both a bas­ket­ball player and cheer­leader. She later moved to Hopewell, VA where she mar­ried Thomas Point. Leathia worked at Frank’s Drive-in as the first African Amer­i­can or­der taker and she also worked for a short ten­ure at Al­lied Chem­i­cal and the Hopewell Re­cre­ation and Parks (Sum­mer Pro­grams). She later be­came a seam­stress. Her joy came from pro­vid­ing child­care to the many, many fam­i­lies in Hopewell and Tri-City ar­eas prior to her fail­ing health. Her hob­bies in­cluded cook­ing, sewing and com­plet­ing daily find-a-word puz­zles.

She was a long-time mem­ber of Friend­ship Bap­tist Church where she served on the Se­nior Usher’s Min­istry, along with par­tic­i­pat­ing with the Se­nior Friend’s Min­istry.

She is sur­vived by her hus­band, Thomas; their daugh­ters, Rev. Linda McNeil (fi­ancé Toney) of Hopewell, VA, and An­gela Jack­son (Rev. Ben) of Chesterfield, VA; their son, T. Wendell Point, Ph.D. (Va­lerie) of Suffolk, VA; seven grand­chil­dren, Darael Point of Prince Ge­orge, VA, Jer­maine Point (LaTonya) of Hopewell, VA, Jor­dan Point of Fred­er­icks­burg, VA, Kameryn Point of St. Fran­cis, SD, Mikala Jack­son, Ash­lee Jack­son, and Briana Jack­son, all of Chesterfield, VA; and two great-grand­chil­dren, Bran­don Point and Bray­den Point of Hopewell, VA. She is also sur­vived by two broth­ers, Clifton Smith (Thelma) of Linden, NJ, and Joseph Smith of Prov­i­dence Forge, VA; four sis­ters-in-law, Sarah John­son of Stock­bridge, GA, Ge­or­gianna Smith of Riegel­wood, NC, Grace Smith of Newark, NJ, and Ruthie Smith of Riegel­wood, NC; one brother-in-law, Robert Ja­cobs of Fayetteville, NC; sev­eral nieces, neph­ews, cousins and many, many friends (de­voted were Martha Kelly and Phyl­lis Humphrey).

She was pre­ceded in death by her par­ents; sis­ters, Mary Lee Ja­cobs (Barm Ja­cobs), Annie Martin (Clyde Martin), and Juanita Ja­cobs; her broth­ers, Alex Smith, Leroy Smith, Char­lie Smith (Bertha­lene), and David Smith.

Vis­i­ta­tion will be on Sun­day, Septem­ber 9, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel of Bland & Tucker Funeral Homes, Hopewell, VA.

A Cel­e­bra­tion of Life will be held Mon­day, Septem­ber 10, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at Friend­ship Bap­tist Church, 1305 Ar­ling­ton Rd., Hopewell, VA, Rev. Dr. Nor­wood Car­son of­fi­ci­at­ing and Rev. Dr. Carl John­son, eu­lo­giz­ing. In­ter­ment will fol­low on Tues­day, Septem­ber 11, 2018, at the Rest­well Ceme­tery in North Carolina.
