LEATHIA M. POINT
Leathia Mae Point, age 80, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA surrounded by her family.
Leathia was born on May 3, 1938, to Charles Henry and Avie Graham Smith in Columbus County, NC, where she was educated and a graduate of Armour High School in Riegelwood, NC. During her high school years she was both a basketball player and cheerleader. She later moved to Hopewell, VA where she married Thomas Point. Leathia worked at Frank’s Drive-in as the first African American order taker and she also worked for a short tenure at Allied Chemical and the Hopewell Recreation and Parks (Summer Programs). She later became a seamstress. Her joy came from providing childcare to the many, many families in Hopewell and Tri-City areas prior to her failing health. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and completing daily find-a-word puzzles.
She was a long-time member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Usher’s Ministry, along with participating with the Senior Friend’s Ministry.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; their daughters, Rev. Linda McNeil (fiancé Toney) of Hopewell, VA, and Angela Jackson (Rev. Ben) of Chesterfield, VA; their son, T. Wendell Point, Ph.D. (Valerie) of Suffolk, VA; seven grandchildren, Darael Point of Prince George, VA, Jermaine Point (LaTonya) of Hopewell, VA, Jordan Point of Fredericksburg, VA, Kameryn Point of St. Francis, SD, Mikala Jackson, Ashlee Jackson, and Briana Jackson, all of Chesterfield, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Point and Brayden Point of Hopewell, VA. She is also survived by two brothers, Clifton Smith (Thelma) of Linden, NJ, and Joseph Smith of Providence Forge, VA; four sisters-in-law, Sarah Johnson of Stockbridge, GA, Georgianna Smith of Riegelwood, NC, Grace Smith of Newark, NJ, and Ruthie Smith of Riegelwood, NC; one brother-in-law, Robert Jacobs of Fayetteville, NC; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends (devoted were Martha Kelly and Phyllis Humphrey).
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Lee Jacobs (Barm Jacobs), Annie Martin (Clyde Martin), and Juanita Jacobs; her brothers, Alex Smith, Leroy Smith, Charlie Smith (Berthalene), and David Smith.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 9, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel of Bland & Tucker Funeral Homes, Hopewell, VA.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, September 10, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at Friendship Baptist Church, 1305 Arlington Rd., Hopewell, VA, Rev. Dr. Norwood Carson officiating and Rev. Dr. Carl Johnson, eulogizing. Interment will follow on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the Restwell Cemetery in North Carolina.
