James River Ball supporters attend gala that benefits local students
James River Ball organizers held their annual fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Petersburg Country Club.
Diane Lawder, a member of the charity group, said “The James River Ball is an annual fundraiser that we’ve been doing since 1964, started by a lot of our parents and grandparents, and it supports bringing cultural arts events to Hopewell public schools.”
Through their fundraising efforts, Lawder said the group has exposed Hopewell students to performances by the Richmond Ballet, the Richmond Symphony, Theatre Four, the Virginia Opera and the Virginia Repertoire Theatre.
"This year we were able to bring the Virginia Opera and the Virginia Repertoire Theatre to the schools, so that students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to be exposed to this could see these performances,” she said.
The group began in 1964, founded by twelve women, Lawder explained. “And, it has grown since then. Every year we have about 250 and 300 guests come [to the Ball]. And, those that could not attend very generously sent in a donation, as well.”
Everyone's "support and generosity" is appreciated, Lawder said.
