MARTHA A. EVANS

The Progress-Index Weekend - - OBITUARIES -

On the morning of Saturday, October 27, 2018, our angel, Mrs. Martha Ann (Goode) Evans took her last breath and began making her home in Heaven. Martha, affectionately known as “Billy” by her family, was born on September 21, 1942, in Chesterfield County, VA. From birth to her last days, Martha was a fighter; never allowing life’s obstacles to hold her back. Many would say she was a tough cookie. To know Martha, is to know that she was a hard-working woman and very independent! There wasn’t a doubt that she loved her family and if you got to know her, she surely treated you as such. Her children and grandchildren were her world, she always went above and beyond for them.

She was educated in the Chesterfield County Public School System. She retired from the City of Petersburg and worked as a part-time Custodian at Walnut Hill Elementary School, where she loved interacting with the children. Martha was a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, serving as a Church Custodian and a member of the Security and Usher Board Ministry’s for many years. She was also a member of the L.A. Bailey Choir.

Whether gathering at her home on South Park Drive or at her sister’s, she loved having her family all together. Martha loved to clean, dance, watch football, and play cards. No holiday or family gathering would be right without a game of Deuces, Spades, or Pokeno. She loved playing, especially with her grandchildren. She was also a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan. While some of us were running around the house, she would be sitting on the couch focused on her Steeler’s winning.

Awaiting her Heavenly arrival are her parents, Joseph and Emily Goode; brothers, Raleigh Goode and Alfred “Bo Dilly” Goode, Sr.; and grandson, Javonta “Bert Bert” Crenshaw.

She leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Henry Evans; loving siblings, Charles Goode and Doris Summers, both of Petersburg, VA; brothers in love, Garland Evans (Otelia) of Chesterfield, George Evans of Alexandria, James Evans (Laura), and Russell Evans (Jackie) of Matoaca; sisters in love, Cornell Wilkins of Richmond, Linnie Wingfield (Charles) of Sutherland, and Vera Yates (Cleaver) of Petersburg.

She also leaves to cherish her memory devoted children, Tyris Akins, Mitchell Evans (Sheila), Melissa Turner (Darrell), Ray Goode (Bridgette), Lamont Evans, and Nakita Barnes, all of Petersburg, VA; grandchildren, Jada N. Akins of Bowie, MD, Randy Aubrey, Jr. of Detroit, MI, Derrain (Brittney) of Sacramento, CA, Terrain Goode of Richmond, VA, and K’von Evans, J’Ari Brown, Shakia Barnes, and Joshua Clarke, all of Petersburg, VA; great-grandchildren, Rashaun Lopez-Aubrey and Ryleigh Aubrey of Detroit, MI, Ariyuanna Crenshaw of New York, Jayden Goode of Sacramento, CA, Kay’siya Jordan, Ja’Vonii Barnes, and K’mori White, all of Petersburg, VA.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

2 Corinthians 5:8 says, “…to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” We are confident in knowing that she is now rejoicing with her Heavenly Father. Although she is not physically here, her spirit will live on through her loved ones. We are thankful for her life and will surely miss her deeply.

Services will be held 12:00 Noon, Monday, November 5, 2018, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA., the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., Pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
