Field photography hike
PETERSBURG — On Saturday, Nov. 24, Petersburg National Battlefield will provide a ranger-led hiking event as part of our “Healthy Parks Healthy People” initiative. The free 3-hour program will begin at 9 a.m. at the park’s Eastern Front Unit Visitor Center parking lot.
This hiking program will compare how battlefields look today next to images by Union Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady and his staff. This program will delve into why Brady is often regarded as the “Father of photojournalism.” Hikers should plan for a 6 mile roundtrip trek through the nature trail system. No less than 3 stops are planned including a group photo. This hike is through the nature trail system and features hilly terrain with wooden bridges, tree roots, and loose gravel.
The Eastern Front Unit Visitor Center is located at 5001 Siege Road. Participants should bring drinking water and dress for the weather and terrain. For more information, contact Ranger Maggs Vibo by email at Margaret_ Viboolsittiseri@nps.gov or call (804) 732-3531 ext. 222.
