Free con­cert

COLO­NIAL HEIGHTS — The Peters­burg Sym­phony Orches­tra and Colo­nial Heights High School will present a con­cert on Satur­day, Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m., in the Colo­nial Heights High School au­di­to­rium, 3600 Con­duit Road.

The con­cert is free and open to the pub­lic.

The con­cert, "The Ro­man­tics", will fea­ture mu­sic from com­posers of the Ro­man­tic Era and mu­sic in the Ro­man­tic style such as "The Mon­gagues and the Ca­pulets" from Romeo & Juliet by Serge Prokofiev. The event will also fea­ture high­lights from Juras­sic Park by John Wil­liams.

Ulysses Kirk­sey is PSO mu­sic di­rec­tor; Kyle Flohre is the Colo­nial Heights High School band di­rec­tor.

Field pho­tog­ra­phy hike

PETERS­BURG — On Satur­day, Nov. 24, Peters­burg Na­tional Bat­tle­field will pro­vide a ranger-led hik­ing event as part of our “Healthy Parks Healthy Peo­ple” ini­tia­tive. The free 3-hour pro­gram will be­gin at 9 a.m. at the park’s Eastern Front Unit Vis­i­tor Cen­ter park­ing lot.

This hik­ing pro­gram will com­pare how bat­tle­fields look to­day next to im­ages by Union Civil War pho­tog­ra­pher, Matthew Brady and his staff. This pro­gram will delve into why Brady is of­ten re­garded as the “Fa­ther of pho­to­jour­nal­ism.” Hik­ers should plan for a 6 mile roundtrip trek through the na­ture trail sys­tem. No less than 3 stops are planned in­clud­ing a group photo. This hike is through the na­ture trail sys­tem and fea­tures hilly ter­rain with wooden bridges, tree roots, and loose gravel.
