Hopewell dominates regular season finale
Briggs scores 5 TDs, Blue Devils rout Monarchs 61-7 Petersburg Boys Volleyball
HOPEWELL - The Blue Devils defended Merner Field in dominant fashion with a 61-7 blowout win over Meadowbrook to close out the regular season.
The Blue Devils head into the VHSL football Region 3B playoffs on a record of 8-1. It was Hopewell’s first win with over 60 points scored since their 63-20 trouncing of Culpeper in the opening round of the 2016 playoffs.
Blue Devils sophomore Robert Briggs Jr. feasted on nine carries with 93 rushing yards and four touchdowns, as well as on a 31-yard touchdown reception.
Senior quarterback Daniel Grier in his return completed all four of his passes on the evening for 82 yards and the touchdown throw to Briggs.
Briggs scored four of the first touchdowns of the game with Sean Allen flexing his blistering speed to take a punt return to the house for six points in that stretch.
Sophomore Trey Henderson unleashed a 60-yard sprint to the end zone to make it 40-7, and then Briggs scored his final touchdown of the night on a 31-yard catch from Grier.
Anthony Hale scored the matchup’s final two touchdowns as he set sail on a 76-yard kick return touchdown and added a rushing score.
Allen caugt an interception to go along with his 150 kick return yards. His teammate Jacen Fowlkes blocked a punt and was credited with a forced fumble. Diwan
Robertson Jr. also forced a fumble, and Keshon Cox had a fumble recovery. Hopewell senior kicker Preston Haden went seven-for-nine on his PAT kicks.
Paul Davis scored the lone touchdown for Meadowbrook (0-10) in the first quarter.
Hopewell Football is set to host the first round of the Region 3B playoffs this coming Friday. The Blue Devils were ranked second prior to Thursday’s home game versus the Monarchs and await the final rankings that will set the postseason bracket.
Petersburg Boys Volleyball’s Aaron Haskins and his Crimson Wave teammates concluded the 2018 season with a 3-0 loss to Midlothian in the Region 4 Western Section quarterfinals and a pair of 3-0 wins over Thomas Jefferson.
Hopewell Football, seen in this home game versus Thomas Dale, concluded the regular season on a dominant 61-7 win over Meadowbrook and will host the first round of the Region 3B playoffs.
