School bus over­turns in Din­wid­die with 32 stu­dents on­board

Bus driver charged with reck­less driv­ing

DIN­WID­DIE — A Din­wid­die County school bus head­ing to Suther­land El­e­men­tary that over­turned Thurs­day morn­ing left many in the com­mu­nity shaken but re­sulted in no ma­jor in­juries.

The ac­ci­dent oc­curred at about 8 a.m. Jan. 12. Ac­cord­ing to Vir­ginia State Po­lice, the bus, which was trav­el­ing south in the 25,000 block of Fern­dale Road, ran off the right side of the road­way. It then struck a snow em­bank­ment, crossed over Pinecroft Road where it con­nected with Fern­dale and over­turned on its side in a ditch.

No other ve­hi­cles were in­volved in the crash. The bus driver, Linda C. Moss, 67, of Peters­burg, has been charged with reck­less driv­ing.

None of the 32 chil­dren on the bus re­ported ma­jor in­juries, and only one com­plained of mi­nor in­jury. All stu­dents

were trans­ported to one of five area hos­pi­tals — John Ran­dolph Med­i­cal Cen­ter, South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter, John­ston-Wil­lis

Hos­pi­tal, Chip­pen­ham Hos­pi­tal and Vir­ginia Com­mon­wealth Univer­sity Med­i­cal Cen­ter — as a pre­cau­tion­ary mea­sure.

Moss was also trans­ported to VCU Med­i­cal Cen­ter for treat­ment of mi­nor in­juries.

Re­spon­dents to the scene in­cluded Din­wid­die County Fire and EMS, Ch­ester­field Fire and EMS, Et­trick Ma­toaca Res­cue Squad, Colo­nial Heights Fire and EMS, the Din­wid­die Sher­iff’s Of­fice and VSP.

Clarke of­fered thanks to passersby who stopped to as­sist the driver and pas­sen­gers, as well as staff from the nearby First Assem­bly of God who opened their doors to peo­ple at the crash site.

“There was a lot of

com­mu­nity sup­port to­day,” she said.

Ex­tra guid­ance coun­selors will be on hand at Suther­land El­e­men­tary Fri­day for any stu­dents who need ad­di­tional sup­port.

“We want kids to be safe, and we take these

things se­ri­ously,” said Clarke.
