Bus driver charged with reckless driving
DINWIDDIE — A Dinwiddie County school bus heading to Sutherland Elementary that overturned Thursday morning left many in the community shaken but resulted in no major injuries.
The accident occurred at about 8 a.m. Jan. 12. According to Virginia State Police, the bus, which was traveling south in the 25,000 block of Ferndale Road, ran off the right side of the roadway. It then struck a snow embankment, crossed over Pinecroft Road where it connected with Ferndale and overturned on its side in a ditch.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The bus driver, Linda C. Moss, 67, of Petersburg, has been charged with reckless driving.
None of the 32 children on the bus reported major injuries, and only one complained of minor injury. All students
were transported to one of five area hospitals — John Randolph Medical Center, Southside Regional Medical Center, Johnston-Willis
Hospital, Chippenham Hospital and Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center — as a precautionary measure.
Moss was also transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Respondents to the scene included Dinwiddie County Fire and EMS, Chesterfield Fire and EMS, Ettrick Matoaca Rescue Squad, Colonial Heights Fire and EMS, the Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office and VSP.
Clarke offered thanks to passersby who stopped to assist the driver and passengers, as well as staff from the nearby First Assembly of God who opened their doors to people at the crash site.
“There was a lot of
community support today,” she said.
Extra guidance counselors will be on hand at Sutherland Elementary Friday for any students who need additional support.
“We want kids to be safe, and we take these
things seriously,” said Clarke.
