City names new leader

Dou­glas E. Smith to be­come city man­ager

COLO­NIAL HEIGHTS — The Colo­nial Heights City Coun­cil voted unan­i­mously on Tues­day night to in­stall Dou­glas E. Smith as the new city man­ager. The po­si­tion was va­cated by Tom Mat­tis, who moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to his chil­dren.

Smith has for­merly served as as­sis­tant city man­ager for Del­ray Beach, Florida and As­sis­tant Vil­lage Man­ager for North Palm Beach, Florida. He will be com­ing to Colo­nial Heights from Mar­gate, Florida, where he was also the city man­ager.

Smith will be re­turn­ing to Vir­ginia, as he grad­u­ated from Lib­erty Univer­sity with a de­gree in govern­ment.

He be­gan his ca­reer in lo­cal govern­ment with the

Uni­fied Govern­ment of Athens-Clarke County, Ge­or­gia and has over 20 years of com­bined govern­ment ex­pe­ri­ence.

“We are very ex­cited to

have Doug as part of our city team” said Colo­nial Heights Mayor T. Gre­gory Kochuba. “He brings vast ex­pe­ri­ence and knowl­edge at the As­sis­tant and City Man­ager level.”

Af­ter grad­u­at­ing from Lib­erty, Smith re­ceived his Masters in Public Ad­min­is­tra­tion from the Univer­sity of Ge­or­gia. Smith is mar­ried to his wife, Lyana, with

whom he has four chil­dren: Emily, Sarah, Johnathan, and An­drew.

The city man­ager is ap­pointed by the Colo­nial Heights City Coun­cil, and

is re­spon­si­ble for the over­all man­age­ment of all city de­part­ments.

Smith is sched­uled to start the po­si­tion in March.
