ISABEL J. BERRY
Mrs. Isabel Jones Berry, affectionately known as Mother Berry, born October 21, 1923, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Colonial Heights Health Care Center, Colonial Heights, Va. She was a native of Petersburg, Va., (5th Ward Community) but resided in Chesterfield County.
For 92 years, Mrs. Berry never had an illness, but during this time she handled her change in physical status with a great level of faith, grace, dignity, a strong will and determination for herself and her family. Isabel was one of two children born to the late Alice J. Lanier (Miss Peaches). Mother Berry loved God, food and life with her family, friends, and her church family of Bethesda Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Richard C. Berry III whom she married in January 1943; her mother, Alice Lanier; and aunt, Inez Gibson; and great grandson, Jeremiah.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, a brother, James Arthur Lanier (Latishia); seven children, Richard C. Berry IV (Janet), devoted and loving Alice B. Pyer (Charles), devoted and loving Lewis J. Berry (Valarie), Adolphus M. Berry (Nell), Christian L. Berry (Elizabeth), Alonzo S. Berry (Karen) and devoted and loving, Emmett M. Berry (Judith); brother-inlaw, William L. Berry; seventeen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; a close and loving cousin, Mildred Hayes; close, loving and committed cousins the Gressems, Williams, and Arnold families; and host of nieces, nephews and friends.
At an early age, Isabel joined Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., and later in life, joined Bethesda Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va., where she served on the following committees: Missionary Society Circle No. 1, member of Happy Young Hearted Senior Ministry, and member of the Deaconess Ministry. She loved participating in Café Nuggets Bible Study as a way of sharing her kind-hearted spirit of happiness and love to her fellow friends to name a few, Dorothy West, Julia McGill, Barbara Jones, Marion Swann, Mildred McClenny and Shirley Martin-Flowers.
Mrs. Berry was a dedicated employee of Chesterfield County Schools where she served as a bus driver for over 30 years until she retired to do what she loved best and that is “FAMILY.” Isabel was highly respected and recognized as an icon of George Washington Carver High School in Chester, Va. Mother Berry became a caretaker for her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many families in the surrounding community. She greeted everyone with love, a genuine smile and words of encouragement in the care taking of their children. She consistently provided a spiritual and loving home.
Outside of taking care of children, she opened her home to students of Virginia State University and soldiers from Fort Lee, Va. She provided strangers with a warm and loving home away from home.
Mother Berry is truly going to be missed by her family and friends. We know that heaven is going to welcome her with open arms!
The family will mourn her leaving this heavenly earth to join our father, grandmother, and other family members. However, we sing with praises and joy for her transition over to the kingdom of heaven with God and his angels.
