LINWOOD O. PAYTON
Deacon Linwood Owen Payton, the eldest child of the late Mozell and Justine Wynn Payton, was born on September 27, 1942. After a battle with Alzheimer’s and a long fight, God in his infinite wisdom called his child home to be with him on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Linwood was raised in Petersburg, Virginia and reared in the counties of Dinwiddie and Carson, Virginia as a child. He was educated in the Petersburg Public School System and was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1963.
Linwood worked at Central State Mental Hospital where he was a patient assistant. He later moved on to work as a plant worker and supervisor at Hercules (Aqualon) in Hopewell, Virginia where he retired from after 41 years of dedicated service.
Linwood was preceded in death by: his godson, Antonio Harris, Jr.; three brothers- in-law, Nathaniel “June” Carter, Jr., Deacon Roy Carter and John Holliday, all from New Jersey; and one sister- in-law Margie Carter, Hackensack, New Jersey.
He is survived by: his wife and caregiver of 50 years, Novella Ann Carter Payton of Petersburg, Va.; two children, Van M. Payton and Felicia Payton Perry (Kelvin), both of Petersburg, Va.; two grandsons he loved and adored, Justin and Jordan Perry; a precious granddaughter, Miracle Sloan; two sisters, Estelle P. Allen of Petersburg, Va., and Wanda P. Simmons (Melvin) of Chester, Va.; three brothers, Mozell Payton, Jr. (Carlotta) of San Pedro, Calif., Allen Leroy Payton (Modessa) of Chesterfield, Va., and Preston Payton (Shirley) of Petersburg, Va.; six sisters- in law, Iola Holliday of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Deacon Alicia Walker (Overseer Alan), Diane Carter, both of Westwood, N.J., Irish Riley of Rahway, N.J., Elouise Newman of Paterson, N.J., and Jaqueline Carter of Hackensack, N.J.; two brothers-inlaw, Milton Carter of Hackensack, N.J., and Van (Nancy) Carter of Colonial, N.J.; two aunts, Dorothy Mae Payton Dayne of Washington D.C., and Willie Meaneer Branch of Carson, Va.; and a host of several other family and friends too numerous to name.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1025 Halifax Street, Petersburg, with Pastor Lamont Hobbs eulogizing and Rev. Herbert Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Dinwiddie, Va. There will be a wake from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the chapel of Bland & Tucker Funeral Homes, 137 Harrison Street, Petersburg. Family is asked to assemble at the residence, 590 Roberson Street, Petersburg, at 11:15 a.m. on the day of the service.
