Dea­con Lin­wood Owen Pay­ton, the el­dest child of the late Mozell and Jus­tine Wynn Pay­ton, was born on Septem­ber 27, 1942. Af­ter a bat­tle with Alzheimer’s and a long fight, God in his in­fi­nite wis­dom called his child home to be with him on Sun­day, Septem­ber 10, 2017. Lin­wood was raised in Peters­burg, Vir­ginia and reared in the coun­ties of Din­wid­die and Car­son, Vir­ginia as a child. He was ed­u­cated in the Peters­burg Pub­lic School Sys­tem and was a grad­u­ate of Pe­abody High School, Class of 1963.

Lin­wood worked at Cen­tral State Men­tal Hos­pi­tal where he was a pa­tient as­sis­tant. He later moved on to work as a plant worker and su­per­vi­sor at Her­cules (Aqualon) in Hopewell, Vir­ginia where he re­tired from af­ter 41 years of ded­i­cated ser­vice.

Lin­wood was pre­ceded in death by: his god­son, An­to­nio Har­ris, Jr.; three broth­ers- in-law, Nathaniel “June” Carter, Jr., Dea­con Roy Carter and John Hol­l­i­day, all from New Jersey; and one sis­ter- in-law Margie Carter, Hack­en­sack, New Jersey.

He is sur­vived by: his wife and care­giver of 50 years, Novella Ann Carter Pay­ton of Peters­burg, Va.; two chil­dren, Van M. Pay­ton and Feli­cia Pay­ton Perry (Kelvin), both of Peters­burg, Va.; two grand­sons he loved and adored, Justin and Jor­dan Perry; a pre­cious grand­daugh­ter, Mir­a­cle Sloan; two sis­ters, Estelle P. Allen of Peters­burg, Va., and Wanda P. Sim­mons (Melvin) of Ch­ester, Va.; three broth­ers, Mozell Pay­ton, Jr. (Car­lotta) of San Pe­dro, Calif., Allen Leroy Pay­ton (Modessa) of Ch­ester­field, Va., and Preston Pay­ton (Shirley) of Peters­burg, Va.; six sis­ters- in law, Iola Hol­l­i­day of Mt. Lau­rel, N.J., Dea­con Ali­cia Walker (Over­seer Alan), Diane Carter, both of West­wood, N.J., Ir­ish Ri­ley of Rah­way, N.J., Elouise New­man of Pater­son, N.J., and Jaque­line Carter of Hack­en­sack, N.J.; two broth­ers-in­law, Mil­ton Carter of Hack­en­sack, N.J., and Van (Nancy) Carter of Colo­nial, N.J.; two aunts, Dorothy Mae Pay­ton Dayne of Wash­ing­ton D.C., and Wil­lie Mea­neer Branch of Car­son, Va.; and a host of sev­eral other fam­ily and friends too nu­mer­ous to name.

A Cel­e­bra­tion of Life will be held at 12:30 p.m. Satur­day, Septem­ber 16, 2017, at Met­ro­pol­i­tan Bap­tist Church, 1025 Hal­i­fax Street, Peters­burg, with Pas­tor La­mont Hobbs eu­lo­giz­ing and Rev. Her­bert An­der­son of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment will fol­low at Din­wid­die Memo­rial Park, Din­wid­die, Va. There will be a wake from 7 to 8 p.m. Fri­day evening at the chapel of Bland & Tucker Fu­neral Homes, 137 Har­ri­son Street, Peters­burg. Fam­ily is asked to as­sem­ble at the res­i­dence, 590 Rober­son Street, Peters­burg, at 11:15 a.m. on the day of the ser­vice.
