Mary Lee Pur­cell, 84, of Hamp­stead, N.C., and for­merly of Colo­nial Heights, Va., passed away peace­fully Septem­ber 8, 2017, af­ter a life full of love and learn­ing. She was pre­de­ceased by her par­ents, Jerry and Mil­dred Lee; and her hus­band, Don­ald Pur­cell. She is sur­vived by her chil­dren, Donna Pur­cell Mayes (James) and Jeff Pur­cell (Mary); her sib­lings, Les­lie Lee (Dot­tie), Christine Wood (Sam), Jeanette Blake (Bobby), and Ken­neth Lee (Brenda); and sev­eral nieces and neph­ews.

As an Army wife, Mary lived around the world, in­clud­ing France and Ja­pan, where she climbed Mount Fuji. In Vir­ginia, she worked as an of­fice man­ager for an oral surgery prac­tice and a real es­tate agent. She vol­un­teered as a Girl Scout leader, swim­ming in­struc­tor, and thrift store worker. The fam­ily thanks Right at Home Wilm­ing­ton staff and care­givers for their ex­cep­tion­ally lov­ing, de­voted care of Mary.

A fu­neral ser­vice will be held Fri­day, Septem­ber 15, 2017, at Blake’s Chapel Ad­vent Chris­tian Church, start­ing at 2 p.m., pre­ceded by visi­ta­tion start­ing at 1 p.m. In­ter­ment will be held in the church ceme­tery. In lieu of flow­ers, please do­nate to the church at 88 Blakes Chapel Road, Hamp­stead, NC 28443, the Alzheimer’s As­so­ci­a­tion, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
