Por­tion of De­fense Road closes as crew clean up

PETERS­BURG — Po­lice were called to the scene of an ac­ci­dent be­tween a bus and a pas­sen­ger ve­hi­cle at John­son and De­fense Roads shortly be­fore 4 p.m. Tues­day.

Ac­cord­ing to Peters­burg Bureau of Po­lice Sgt. Matthew Gil­strap, the bus was car­ry­ing nine kids from a pri­vate af­ter school pro­gram when the two ve­hi­cles made con­tact. De­cals on the bus in­di­cated the ve­hi­cle was op­er­ated by The Out­reach Foun­da­tion, a Peters­burg­based be­hav­ioral and men­tal health ser­vices provider.

The pas­sen­ger ve­hi­cle, a white Dodge Neon, was re­port­edly car­ry­ing three in­di­vid­u­als.

Gil­strap es­ti­mated three or four of the chil­dren were trans­ported to the hos­pi­tal as a pre­cau­tion, and a hu­man re­sources rep­re­sen­ta­tive of The Out­reach Foun­da­tion con­firmed that mul­ti­ple chil­dren

were trans­ported “for pre­cau­tion­ary rea­sons.”

Po­lice tem­po­rar­ily blocked off a por­tion of De­fense Road as the in­ves­ti­ga­tion con­tin­ued. Gil­strap es­ti­mated the road would re­open around 5 p.m.
