Mr. Calvin Bethel Pow­ell, Jr., age 66, passed away qui­etly on Fri­day, Septem­ber 29, 2017. He was born on July 23, 1951, in Lynch­burg, Va., to Calvin B. Pow­ell, Sr. and Ju­lia M. Pow­ell, both of whom pre­ceded him in death.

He re­ceived his pri­mary, sec­ondary and some post­sec­ondary ed­u­ca­tion in Vir­ginia. Upon grad­u­a­tion from Ma­toaca High School in 1969, Calvin at­tended Vir­ginia State Col­lege (Uni­ver­sity). He was a mem­ber of the in­fa­mous high step­ping VSC March­ing Band where he loved play­ing the bass drum. Calvin was also a mem­ber of the con­cert band and orches­tra where he was af­forded the op­por­tu­nity to go on a Euro­pean tour in 1972, which was a dream of Dr. Nathaniel Gatlin. The tour in­cluded London, Paris, Am­s­ter­dam, Switzer­land and Ger­many.

Calvin loved all gen­res of mu­sic. His com­pas­sion for com­mu­ni­ca­tion kept him in con­tact with a host of peo­ple from all back­grounds. He loved to de­bate is­sues whether he was right or wrong. Calvin love for the Washington Red­skins was truly un­shake­able. It’s be­lieved that he was a Red­skins fan from birth.

Calvin be­gan work­ing for Tex­aco Inc. in 1973. He left Vir­ginia in 1978, after ac­cept­ing a trans­fer with the com­pany to Cherry Hill, NJ, where he resided for five years. Calvin en­rolled at Rut­gers’s Uni­ver­sity where he re­ceived his Bach­e­lor’s de­gree in Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion. Shortly after grad­u­a­tion, he and his fam­ily moved to Mis­souri City, TX, in 1983. His ca­reer with Tex­aco Inc. con­tin­ued un­til the com­pany merger with Chevron in 2003. After ded­i­cat­ing 30 years of ser­vice to the com­pany, Calvin re­tired. Through­out his ca­reer with Tex­aco, Calvin met sev­eral life­long friends.

Calvin was truly ded­i­cated to vis­it­ing his mother through the years. She lived with the com­fort of know­ing that her son would al­ways be there for her. Calvin moved back to Vir­ginia in Oc­to­ber of 2016 and reded­i­cated his life to Christ at Gill­field Bap­tist Church.

Calvin was pre­ceded in death by his step­son, Robert L. Hayes.

Those who love and mourn him will miss his quick wit, ad­vice, gen­eros­ity, hearty laugh­ter and en­cour­age­ment. Calvin leaves to cher­ish his mem­o­ries, a de­voted and faith­ful wife of 45 years, Bar­bara Hayes Pow­ell; two sons, Kevin B. Pow­ell (Danielle) and Calvin S. Pow­ell (Phuong); nine grand­chil­dren, Tay­lor Hayes (Chanel), Joshua Hayes, Ero­nisha Mitchell, Ash­ton Bishop, Nivek Pow­ell, Kevin B. Pow­ell, Jr., Cay­den K. Pow­ell, Zoe L. Pow­ell and Kei­tha Bean; one great grand­son, Nasir Hayes. He also leaves to cher­ish his mem­ory a spe­cial cousin, Spencer C. Stone (Kathey); a host of nieces, neph­ews and other fam­ily mem­bers and friends.

Ser­vices for Mr. Calvin B. Pow­ell, Jr. will be held at 12 noon, Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 14, 2017, at Gill­field Bap­tist Church, 209 Perry Street, Peters­burg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Ge­orge W.C. Lyons, Jr., Pas­tor. The in­ter­ment to fol­low at Bland­ford Ceme­tery.
