CALVIN B. POWELL JR.
Mr. Calvin Bethel Powell, Jr., age 66, passed away quietly on Friday, September 29, 2017. He was born on July 23, 1951, in Lynchburg, Va., to Calvin B. Powell, Sr. and Julia M. Powell, both of whom preceded him in death.
He received his primary, secondary and some postsecondary education in Virginia. Upon graduation from Matoaca High School in 1969, Calvin attended Virginia State College (University). He was a member of the infamous high stepping VSC Marching Band where he loved playing the bass drum. Calvin was also a member of the concert band and orchestra where he was afforded the opportunity to go on a European tour in 1972, which was a dream of Dr. Nathaniel Gatlin. The tour included London, Paris, Amsterdam, Switzerland and Germany.
Calvin loved all genres of music. His compassion for communication kept him in contact with a host of people from all backgrounds. He loved to debate issues whether he was right or wrong. Calvin love for the Washington Redskins was truly unshakeable. It’s believed that he was a Redskins fan from birth.
Calvin began working for Texaco Inc. in 1973. He left Virginia in 1978, after accepting a transfer with the company to Cherry Hill, NJ, where he resided for five years. Calvin enrolled at Rutgers’s University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Shortly after graduation, he and his family moved to Missouri City, TX, in 1983. His career with Texaco Inc. continued until the company merger with Chevron in 2003. After dedicating 30 years of service to the company, Calvin retired. Throughout his career with Texaco, Calvin met several lifelong friends.
Calvin was truly dedicated to visiting his mother through the years. She lived with the comfort of knowing that her son would always be there for her. Calvin moved back to Virginia in October of 2016 and rededicated his life to Christ at Gillfield Baptist Church.
Calvin was preceded in death by his stepson, Robert L. Hayes.
Those who love and mourn him will miss his quick wit, advice, generosity, hearty laughter and encouragement. Calvin leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted and faithful wife of 45 years, Barbara Hayes Powell; two sons, Kevin B. Powell (Danielle) and Calvin S. Powell (Phuong); nine grandchildren, Taylor Hayes (Chanel), Joshua Hayes, Eronisha Mitchell, Ashton Bishop, Nivek Powell, Kevin B. Powell, Jr., Cayden K. Powell, Zoe L. Powell and Keitha Bean; one great grandson, Nasir Hayes. He also leaves to cherish his memory a special cousin, Spencer C. Stone (Kathey); a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Services for Mr. Calvin B. Powell, Jr. will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry Street, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. George W.C. Lyons, Jr., Pastor. The interment to follow at Blandford Cemetery.
