WAVERLY — The Virginia State Police are investigating an accident Tuesday morning involving a Waverly Police Department vehicle that left a town resident dead and closed a section of U.S. Route 460 for several hours.

State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said a 2014 Dodge Charger owned by the Town of Waverly Police Department was traveling east on Route 460 around 1:50 a.m. when it hit a pedestrian in the roadway at the intersection with State Route 40.

The pedestrian has been identified as Antonio T. Green, 47, of the 500 block of Moore

Street in Waverly.

The State Police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist with the investigation, and all lanes of Route 460 were closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The highway has now reopened.

The investigation is continuing, and Anaya said the findings “are dependent upon several other state agencies.”

Additional information is expected to be released later, Anaya said.
