In the early morn­ing of Satur­day, Novem­ber 11, 2017, Leon Wil­liam John­son, 92, made his peace­ful tran­si­tion to rest for eter­nity in his Heav­enly Home.

Leon was a na­tive of Din­wid­die, Va., and was the fourth of five chil­dren born to the late Grover John­son and Ruth John­son Walker. He re­ceived his early ed­u­ca­tion in Din­wid­die County Public Schools. He grad­u­ated from Vir­ginia State Col­lege, now Vir­ginia State Univer­sity, in 1949 with his BS De­gree in Vo­ca­tional Ed­u­ca­tion. He taught in McKinney, Va., for seven years and in Peters­burg, Va., for 29 years.

Prior to his re­tire­ment in 1985, he worked part­time as an in­struc­tor at the Bap­tist Chil­dren’s Home. After his re­tire­ment, he joined the staff full time as an in­struc­tor and other var­ied jobs, which meant, he was a “Jack Of All Trades.” Leon’s love and de­vo­tion to chil­dren lead him to join the Bap­tist Home Im­prove­ment As­so­ci­a­tion whose pur­pose was to im­prove the qual­ity of life for chil­dren.

He was a mem­ber of Zion Bap­tist Church for over 68 years and as one of the oldest mem­bers, he was a Sparkling Diamond. His ser­vice and con­tri­bu­tions to the church in­cludes: Mem­ber of the Her­itage Board, Giles B. Evans Memo­rial Club and Men’s Sun­day School Class. He was in­stru­men­tal in de­vel­op­ing sev­eral im­por­tant church his­tory projects, no­table fi­nan­cial as­sis­tance to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts pro­grams as well as other be­hind the scene ac­tiv­i­ties. Leon was also hon­ored as Zion Bap­tist Church’s Man of the Year in 2010.

He was pre­ceded in death by his sib­lings: a brother, Dr. Over­ton R. John­son (Kate); and sis­ters, Ruby Lee (Jonathan), Grover Se­line Jones (Dossie).

He is sur­vived by his lov­ing wife of 69 years, Bar­bara Cowherd John­son; his son, Ronell Leon John­son (Sherri); and grand­son, Bran­don Ronell John­son (Jes­sica). He is also sur­vived by his sis­ter, Myrtella Hicks (Owen); and many nieces, neph­ews and cousins.

A memo­rial cel­e­bra­tion will be held at 11 a.m. on Satur­day, Novem­ber 18, 2017, at Zion Bap­tist Church with the Pas­tor, Rev. Michael Shan­non, Sr., of­fi­ci­at­ing and Rev. Dr. An­drew White, eu­lo­giz­ing. In­ter­ment ser­vices will be pri­vate. In lieu of flow­ers the fam­ily re­quest that con­tri­bu­tion be made to the char­ity of your choice in me­mory of Mr. Leon W. John­son. Fu­neral ser­vices have been en­trusted to the pro­fes­sional staff of the Peters­burg Chapel of Joseph M. John­son & Son Fu­neral Home, 530 S. Sy­camore St., Peters­burg, (804) 863-4411.
