LEON W. JOHNSON
In the early morning of Saturday, November 11, 2017, Leon William Johnson, 92, made his peaceful transition to rest for eternity in his Heavenly Home.
Leon was a native of Dinwiddie, Va., and was the fourth of five children born to the late Grover Johnson and Ruth Johnson Walker. He received his early education in Dinwiddie County Public Schools. He graduated from Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, in 1949 with his BS Degree in Vocational Education. He taught in McKinney, Va., for seven years and in Petersburg, Va., for 29 years.
Prior to his retirement in 1985, he worked parttime as an instructor at the Baptist Children’s Home. After his retirement, he joined the staff full time as an instructor and other varied jobs, which meant, he was a “Jack Of All Trades.” Leon’s love and devotion to children lead him to join the Baptist Home Improvement Association whose purpose was to improve the quality of life for children.
He was a member of Zion Baptist Church for over 68 years and as one of the oldest members, he was a Sparkling Diamond. His service and contributions to the church includes: Member of the Heritage Board, Giles B. Evans Memorial Club and Men’s Sunday School Class. He was instrumental in developing several important church history projects, notable financial assistance to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts programs as well as other behind the scene activities. Leon was also honored as Zion Baptist Church’s Man of the Year in 2010.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: a brother, Dr. Overton R. Johnson (Kate); and sisters, Ruby Lee (Jonathan), Grover Seline Jones (Dossie).
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Barbara Cowherd Johnson; his son, Ronell Leon Johnson (Sherri); and grandson, Brandon Ronell Johnson (Jessica). He is also survived by his sister, Myrtella Hicks (Owen); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
