No. 2 Richard Bland to host Cape Fear

SOUTH PRINCE GE­ORGE — Richard Bland Col­lege will host NJCAA Di­vi­sion I Cape Fear (N.C.) Com­mu­nity Col­lege in a non-re­gion men's bas­ket­ball game on Wed­nes­day night, Novem­ber 15, at 6 p.m. in States­man Hall.

The NJCAA Di­vi­sion II pre­sea­son na­tion­ally-ranked No. 2 States­men are 4-0 this sea­son, in­clud­ing 2-0 at home, fol­low­ing a 101-85 win past the Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land on Nov. 10. The Sea Devils are 2-1 this sea­son af­ter split­ting a pair of games Nov. 10-11 at a tour­na­ment in Ge­or­gia.

Richard Bland de­feated Cape Fear 78-72 last sea­son (Nov. 19) in States­man Hall.

It'll be Greek Alumni Night in States­man Hall as the Col­lege wel­comes back those alumni who were mem­bers of the Greek Com­mu­nity through­out many years on the RBC cam­pus. Ad­mis­sion is free to all States­men home games, while the con­test can be heard lo­cally on WHAP Ra­dio, Fox Sports 1340 AM.

Scout­ing the States­men

No. 2 Richard Bland is 4-0 af­ter the 16-point home win past South­ern Mary­land on Nov. 10. The States­men, who are an out­stand­ing 108-31 (.777) over the past four-plus sea­sons, are coached by fifth-year head coach Chuck Moore (156-47 over­all), and as­sisted by thirdyear as­sis­tant coach Pre­ston Bev­erly and first-year stu­dent as­sis­tant coach Bran­don Henry.

Through four games, Richard Bland has been led in scor­ing by 6-4, 225-pound sopho­more guard Robert Smith/Hamp­ton, who is av­er­ag­ing 21.0 points, 7.8 re­bounds and 2.0 as­sists.

He is fol­lowed by lo­cal 6-7 sopho­more for­ward Stan­ley Tay­lor/Peters­burg, who is av­er­ag­ing a dou­ble-dou­ble of 12.5 points and 10.0 re­bounds, along with 6-2 sopho­more guard Tim Bing Jr./Suit­land, Mary­land (12.5 points, 5.3 re­bounds, 3.3 as­sists) and 6-0 sopho­more guard Ricky Hicks/Bronx, New York (10.0 points, 4.8 as­sists). Richard Bland is av­er­ag­ing 90.0 points per game, while al­low­ing 77.8 points to op­po­nents for a scor­ing mar­gin of +12.2.

Scout­ing the Sea Devils

Cape Fear is 2-1 af­ter an 82-73 road win at Ge­or­gia High­lands Col­lege on Nov. 11 in Rome, Ge­or­gia, and is coached by 10th year head coach Ryan Mantlo. The Sea Devils have been led in scor­ing by fresh­man Donte Ta­tum (20.5), along with sopho­mores Al­ston Davis (11.5), NCAA Di­vi­sion I Univer­sity of Ten­nessee at Chat­tanooga trans­fer Zaqwaun Matthews (11.5) and Jer­ick Haynes (10.5). Cape Fear av­er­ages 76.3 points, al­low­ing 76.3 points for a mar­gin of 0.0.

Se­ries His­tory

Richard Bland and Cape Fear are play­ing for the fifth time in the sport of men's bas­ket­ball, and the States­men lead the se­ries 3-1. Last sea­son, Ricky Hicks scored nine points to lead a bal­anced ef­fort that fea­tured six play­ers with at least eight points in the home win against the Sea Devils, as the team's top ac­tive re­turn­ing scorer in that game. Al­ston Davis scored 12 points as the top re­turn­ing scorer for Cape Fear in that con­test.

The States­men will play NJCAA Di­vi­sion II Mon­roe (N.Y.) Com­mu­nity Col­lege on Fri­day, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m., fol­lowed by a game against NJCAA Di­vi­sion I Mon­roe (N.Y.) Col­lege on Satur­day, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. Richard Bland re­mains away from home to play its first Re­gion 10 con­test this sea­son at Vance-Granville (N.C.) Com­mu­nity Col­lege on Mon­day, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in Henderson, North Carolina.
