PETERSBURG — Police say a computer hacker is responsible for the influx of calls to the city’s Emergency Communications Center from outside of Virginia looking to buy products.

Petersburg Police Capt. Emanuel Chambliss said jurisdictions from Georgia, Alabama and several other southern states have called a number with an 804 area code that goes into Petersburg’s 911 system. That number has been connected to a telemarketing group.

Chambliss said the issue, which also is affecting Richmond’s 911 system, apparently was caused by a hacker who linked the 804 phone number into the system.

Chambliss noted, however, that the issue is not affecting 911 calls originating from Petersburg.

“Our 911 system is still functioning as it should,” he said.

Verizon is working to fix the issue, Chambliss said.
