NEW YORK STATE LIBRARY: Former New York State Archives program director Dr. Bruce W. Dearstyne will discuss his 2015 book, “The Spirit of New York: Defining Events in the Empire State’s History” (SUNY Press, 2015). POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Poestenkill Historical Society’s guest speaker Gerry Robinson will give an illustrated talk about Reuben Waller, Gerry’s great-grandfather who was born into slavery in 1840. As a Confederate general’s body servant Waller witnessed Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Gerry was intrigued by the history of Reuben Waller and researched the story, which he will present on September 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room at the Town Hall on Route 351. The program is free, all are welcome and refreshments will be served.

SCHOOL OF ROCK: Join Overit on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m. for School of Rock’s Open Tuning Lounge. The event is a chance for School of Rock students and their friends to perform a variety of songs, both covers and originals, for their peers. AVERILL PARK COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA: Do you play a musical instrument? The Averill Park Community Orchestra is starting rehearsals again and eagerly seeks new members. GRAND ROUNDS LECTURE: “The Medical Promise of Chaperone-Mediated Protein Folding,” a special Grand Rounds lecture, will be presented at Albany Medical College, ME-700 by the 2016

recipients of the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research. The recipients are Ulrich Hartl, M.D., managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Germany; Arthur Horwich, M.D., Sterling Professor of Genetics and Pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine; and Susan Lee Lindquist, Ph.D., professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They have been at the forefront of chaperone-mediated protein folding, studying how to use this natural biological response to develop treatments for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, as well as cancer and drug resistance.
