Marino to share ‘My In­spir­ing Ugan­dan Jour­ney’

KENT >> The Kent Memo­rial Li­brary, along with Dr. Joseph Baxer, pres­i­dent of the United Na­tions As­so­ci­a­tion of Con­necti­cut, and in col­lab­o­ra­tion with New Mil­ford res­i­dent Karen Pease Marino will hold a pre­sen­ta­tion about Marino’s in­spir­ing jour­neys to Uganda. She is a vol­un­teer from Bead for Life, an or­ga­ni­za­tion which helps women liv­ing in ex­treme poverty be­come self­sus­tain­ing. The pro­gram will be held Satur­day, April 29 at 2 p.m. in the read­ing room at the li­brary.

Af­ter two trips to Uganda, Marino has learned about the coun­try’s gen­er­ous peo­ple, the beau­ti­ful and rich nat­u­ral beauty, liv­ing con­di­tions, school­ing and food. She has be­came friends with Ugan­dan women liv­ing in ex­treme poverty, and will share first-hand how ex­treme poverty af­fects the women and their fam­i­lies liv­ing there.

Along with the talk, there will be hand­made re­cy­cled pa­per bead jew­elry and or­ganic shea prod­ucts avail­able for pur­chase. These items were made by Ugan­dan women, who will re­ceive all pro­ceeds. There will also be lively cul­tural mu­sic, and a va­ri­ety of Ugan­dan food will be served to taste. Marino works as a Se­nior Art Di­rec­tor at Ethan Allen, and says her heart and soul now be­long to the amaz­ing women and girls she has met in Uganda. She has given nu­mer­ous talks on this sub­ject.

Baxer, a res­i­dent of Kent, will lead the pro­gram. Baxer has been en­gaged in the work of sus­tain­ing cul­tural di­ver­sity and me­di­at­ing cross-cul­tural con­flicts for 40 years.
