Pleasant Valley DriveIn to open Friday
BARKHAMSTED >> Fans of the Pleasant Valley Drive-In can spend Friday or Saturday night watching “Beauty and the Beast” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” when the outdoor movie theater opens for the season this weekend.
Showtimes on Friday and Saturday night are 7:30 p.m. or approximately 30 minutes after sunset; the second movie begins after a short intermission period.
Friday is carload night with a charge of $20 per vehicle. On Saturday nights, the theater charges regular admission: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.
The theater has a free carload pass contest on its Facebook page. Patrons can click on the link and enter at facebook.com/pleasantvalleydrivein
The drive-in has a full concession stand with hot dogs, burgers, fries and other treats, or patrons can bring their own picnics and food. No food deliveries are allowed at the park.
Leashed pets are welcome. For those who choose to sit outside, the drive-in recommends bringing insect repellent and sells mosquito repellent coils at the concession stand. During the summer months, families arrive long before sundown to settle in and wait for the movies to begin, officials said in a release. They have the option of sitting in their cars and listening to the movies on a specific radio setting, or outside on the grass with folding chairs or blankets.
Many say they have been coming to the drive-in since they were children, according to testimonies on Facebook.
The Pleasant Valley Drivein Movie Theater has operated since 1947, and has been under the same ownership for the past 19 years.
“We continue to offer a wonderful outdoor family fun venue catering to all ages,” owners said on the movie theater’s website.
The theater sits on a 3-acre lot near the west branch of the Farmington River and can hold up to 250 cars.
The season continues into the fall, including early October, weather permitting, and is also open on Thursday nights during peak season. The drive-in is located at 47 River Road in Barkhamsted and can be reached at 860-379-6102.
Pleasant Valley Drive-In is one of three outdoor theaters in Connecticut. The others include the Mansfield DriveTheatre and Marketplace in Mansfield, and the Southington Drive-In in Southington.
