Pleas­ant Val­ley DriveIn to open Fri­day

BARKHAMSTED >> Fans of the Pleas­ant Val­ley Drive-In can spend Fri­day or Satur­day night watch­ing “Beauty and the Beast” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” when the out­door movie the­ater opens for the sea­son this week­end.

Show­times on Fri­day and Satur­day night are 7:30 p.m. or ap­prox­i­mately 30 min­utes af­ter sun­set; the sec­ond movie be­gins af­ter a short in­ter­mis­sion pe­riod.

Fri­day is car­load night with a charge of $20 per ve­hi­cle. On Satur­day nights, the the­ater charges reg­u­lar ad­mis­sion: $10 for adults, $5 for chil­dren ages 6-12, and free for chil­dren 5 and un­der.

The drive-in has a full con­ces­sion stand with hot dogs, burg­ers, fries and other treats, or pa­trons can bring their own pic­nics and food. No food de­liv­er­ies are al­lowed at the park.

Leashed pets are wel­come. For those who choose to sit out­side, the drive-in rec­om­mends bring­ing in­sect re­pel­lent and sells mos­quito re­pel­lent coils at the con­ces­sion stand. Dur­ing the sum­mer months, fam­i­lies ar­rive long be­fore sun­down to set­tle in and wait for the movies to be­gin, of­fi­cials said in a re­lease. They have the op­tion of sit­ting in their cars and lis­ten­ing to the movies on a spe­cific ra­dio set­ting, or out­side on the grass with fold­ing chairs or blan­kets.

Many say they have been com­ing to the drive-in since they were chil­dren, ac­cord­ing to tes­ti­monies on Face­book.

The Pleas­ant Val­ley Drivein Movie The­ater has op­er­ated since 1947, and has been un­der the same own­er­ship for the past 19 years.

“We con­tinue to of­fer a won­der­ful out­door fam­ily fun venue cater­ing to all ages,” own­ers said on the movie the­ater’s web­site.

The the­ater sits on a 3-acre lot near the west branch of the Farm­ing­ton River and can hold up to 250 cars.

The sea­son con­tin­ues into the fall, in­clud­ing early Oc­to­ber, weather per­mit­ting, and is also open on Thurs­day nights dur­ing peak sea­son. The drive-in is lo­cated at 47 River Road in Barkhamsted and can be reached at 860-379-6102.

Pleas­ant Val­ley Drive-In is one of three out­door the­aters in Con­necti­cut. The oth­ers in­clude the Mans­field DriveTheatre and Mar­ket­place in Mans­field, and the Southing­ton Drive-In in Southing­ton.
