TORRINGTON » The northwest corner’s annual “Tour of the Litchfield Hills” Cycling Event will celebrate its 14th year returning to Torrington’s Coe Memorial Park on Sunday, Aug. 6, to benefit the Cancer Care Fund of the Litchfield Hills, Inc.

In the past 13 years, the event has hosted more than 13,000 participants and sponsors who have raised more than $1 million in donations. All funds raised through this event are used to provide support for cancer patients residing in or receiving treatment in northwest Connecticut.

The Cancer Care Fund of the Litchfield Hills is a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to people battling cancer, and gives assistance for unexpected emergencies for cancer patients for which there are no immediate resources. For example, funds may be allocated for food, transportation, utility bills and medications that are not covered by insurance. The fund also provides funding for complementary therapies available to cancer patients.

A volunteer committee is responsible for producing the event that begins meeting in January. It is a group of loyal supporters who know what they have to do and when they have to do it and have been working together for many years to make this the successful event it has become.

“This is an important event for those of us who live and work in this area. Our friends and family members directly benefit from the proceeds. We are pleased to have helped support residents in need for the 13 years and look forward to many more,” said Dr. Matt Pagano, chairman of the Tour Planning Committee.

This cycling charity ride consists of 12, 30, 55, 75, and 100-mile routes. There are also 2.4, 4.2 and 6 mile walking routes for non-cyclists who wish to participate. All routes begin and end at Coe Park in downtown Torrington and the day concludes with a picnic for participants at the park. All cycling routes follow paved, lightly traveled roads throughout picturesque Litchfield County that are fully supported with rest stops and on-the-road support vehicles.

There is a registration fee of $45 per adult, $15 for children under 12, and $60 for a family of five or less. The registration fee is waived for any individual raising $100 or more. Team registration packets are available for those who wish to join as a team.

A $45 registration fee is required by each Team member (waived for each team member raising $100 or more), regardless of the amount the team raises. All participants will receive a Tshirt specifically designed for the Tour. Additionally, limited edition Tour of the Litchfield Hills cycling jerseys and socks will be available for purchase. All cyclists are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet for the Tour. The event will be held rain or shine; registration fees and donations are non-refundable.
