Annual Les Brown festival slated for this weekend
APottsville band will be among the entertainers celebrating the 11th annual Les
Brown Big Band Weekend. The jazz event will be held April 21 to 23 in Tower City. Brown, the late band leader of the Band of Renown, hails from Reinerton. Joel Guldin, Williams Valley Elementary band director and one of the event’s coordinators, said theweekend activities include a dance on Friday, music festival on Saturday and a nondenominational music service on Sunday.
Pottsville’s M&J Big Band kicks off the entertainment with three hours of big band era dance music for the Les Brown Dance. Festivities will be held from 7 to 10 p. m. today at the Tower City American Legion, 2 Clarks Valley Road, Tower City. Tickets are $ 10; available at the door, or for reserve seating call 717- 926- 2849.
The celebration continues Saturday with the Les Brown Big Band Festival from11 a. m. to 4: 30 p. m. at the Williams Valley High School, 10300 Route 209, Tower City.
Doors open at 10: 30 a. m. and fans can enjoy the music of the big band era on- stage and in the food court. They can personally meet the musicians. Food will be available to purchase throughout the day. Adult admission is $ 10 at the door; children and students ( through college, with ID) are admitted free.
Musical groups scheduled to appear include: America’s Sweethearts, singing the music of the Andrews Sisters; The Big, Big Jazz Band of New Holland; The Lebanon Big Swing Band; Williams Valley Cool Blue Jazz Band; Tulpehocken High School Jazz Band; Williams Valley Elementary Rainbow Jazz Band; Williams Valley Alumni Jazz Band; and the Jonestown Male Chorus.
On Sunday, a Celebration of Music Service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 101 E. Wiconisco St., Muir, with special music by Galena Brass. Organist David Minnich, cousin of Les Brown, will perform the service music. This nondenominational worship service will be held at 3 p. m. and is open to the public.
