Anthracite Philharmonic takes on classical masterpieces
The Anthracite Philharmonic’s concert on Saturday will be a “night not to be missed,” according to the group’s president.
The performance, headlined by “Pathetique Symphony No. 6” by Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, will be held at 7: 30 p. m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Fourth and West Market streets, Pottsville. Tickets are $ 20 and available at Schuylkill County Council for the Arts, 1440 Mahantongo St., Pottsville; The Greystone, 315N. Centre St., Pottsville; Thomas Pharmacy, 101W. Market St., Orwigsburg; by calling 570- 628- 5158 or at the door.
“I just hope a lot of people will come because it’s an extraordinary piece of music and it needs to be heard,” Linda Kriner said. The concert will also feature “Don Giovanni Overture” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius.
It is held in connection with Block of Art, the threeday arts event in downtown Pottsville. Activities for the event will be held from 6 to 10 p. m. today, 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. Saturday and 11 a. m. to 1: 30 p. m. Sunday.
Kriner said this is at least the second year that the philharmonic has performed during Block of Art. She said the relationship is beneficial for both.
“They have expanded music events so it kind of works for both groups,” Kriner said.
As for the music, Kriner said the titles may not be familiar to the public, but fans of old movies will recognize them. For example, the piece was featured in “Now, Voyager” starring Bette Davis.
To make the sound fuller, she brought in more musicians than normally play with the philharmonic. For example, they have 12 violins for Saturday’s concert. Usually they have eight to 10.
“We used every instrument that was asked for,” she said.
People will like the result, Kriner said.
“I was definitely blown away when I heard it,” she said.
