Black Rock District Scouts beautify Valley View Park
VALLEY VIEW — The Valley View Park received much-needed sprucing up thanks to Boy Scouts from several troops in the area this weekend.
Fifty-two Scouts cleaned up the park as part of their Black Rock District Fall Camporee held at the park. The Scouts camped out at the park Friday and wrap up efforts today.
This is the first time Boy Scouts from the Hawk Mountain Council’s Black Rock District, which includes all of Schuylkill County and portions of Berks County, improved the park. Participating were troops 621, Orwigsburg; 652, Klingerstown; 662, Valley View; 725, Barnesville; 731, Ringtown; 745, Ashland; 755, Clamtown; and 780, Gordon.
Chuck Faust, scoutmaster for Troop 731 and activities chairman for Black Rock District, said the group was looking for a community project and liked the park.
The goal was to “introduce fun in a safe and creative way.”
Five projects were done this weekend.
The Scouts put sealer on the benches in front of the stage, painted six weathered park benches white, cleaned out gutters, removed brush and unclogged a drain on the property.
“It would have taken us a couple years to do what they did in an afternoon,” Dave Williams, president of the Valley View Park Association, said.
Trevor Rudacille, 15, of Orwigsburg, a member of Boy
Scout Troop 621, picked up leaves and debris from a drainage area near a spring.
“Over 100 years ago, this was an old farm and this was the spring for the farm,” Williams said.
When the Scouts got there, a couple inches of water and mud were on the ground. The area also had a blocked drain.
“This was just a puddle,” Jacob Bensinger, 15, of Schuylkill Haven, Troop 621, said.
Brush, weeds, mud and water were removed to improve that section of the park.
