Woman charged in sher­iff’s home crash

ASH­LAND — Ash­land po­lice filed charges against a Mount Carmel woman who ran into the home of Schuylkill County Sher­iff Joseph Groody last month.

Po­lice charged Me­lanie Rooney, 39, of 6 S. Quince St., with ac­ci­dents in­volv­ing death or per­sonal in­jury, reck­lessly en­dan­ger­ing an­other per­son, ac­ci­dents in­volv­ing dam­age to at­tended ve­hi­cles or prop­erty, DUI, duty to give in­for­ma­tion or ren­der aid, im­me­di­ate no­tice of ac­ci­dent to po­lice, stop and yield sign vi­o­la­tions, reck­less driv­ing, care­less driv­ing, not driv­ing on road­ways laned for traf­fic, driv­ing an un­safe speed and obe­di­ence to traf­fic con­trol sig­nals.

Po­lice said Rooney was driv­ing a ve­hi­cle about 9:35 p.m. Aug. 14 when she lost con­trol and struck the Groody home at 2304 Wal­nut St.

Af­ter hit­ting the house, po­lice said, Rooney fled the scene on foot and was taken into cus­tody in the park­ing lot of Git­man Broth­ers Shirt Fac­tory.

Rooney was taken to an area hos­pi­tal for treat­ment of in­juries she suf­fered in the crash and re­fused to sub­mit to a blood al­co­hol test, po­lice said.
