Bar­nesville

A hike is slated for 10:30 a.m. to­day at Sil­ver Creek Fire Tower/ Reser­voir at Lo­cust Lake State Park. The 8 1/2-mile trek is rated dif­fi­cult. Par­tic­i­pants should meet at the visi­tor park­ing lot at Lo­cust Lake State Park be­fore the con­tact sta­tion to car­pool at 10:15 a.m. At­ten­dees should bring a lunch and their dog for a “re­lax­ing hike” in the woods. All pets must be leashed and get along with peo­ple and other pets.

Of­fi­cials have is­sued a re­minder for Kline Town­ship res­i­dents that garbage pay­ments are due in full by June 30. Res­i­dents should mail all fi­nal pay­ments to 30 Fifth St., P.O. Box 338, Kelayres, PA 18231. Con­cern­ing an­other mat­ter, per­mit ap­pli­ca­tions can be picked up from hold­ers on the po­lice of­fice door at the mu­nic­i­pal quar­ters, 30 Fifth St. Com­pleted per­mit ap­pli­ca­tions with the proper fees in­side can be slid through the mail slot on the po­lice door, marked per­mit ap­pli­ca­tion. They will be given to the zon­ing of­fi­cer and he will be in con­tact to get the per­mit to those ap­ply­ing in a timely fash­ion, ac­cord­ing to a mu­nic­i­pal re­lease.

Reg­is­tra­tion for Sum­mer Quest is un­der­way at the Nuremberg branch of the Ha­zle­ton Area Pub­lic Li­brary. This year’s theme is “Li­braries Rock,” for chil­dren ages 3 to 12. At 6 p.m. June 28, the Or­wigs­burg Area Free Pub­lic Li­brary will fea­ture Jay Smar in a pro­gram about the his­tory of coal min­ing through song. The pro­gram is free and all are wel­come. This year is the 250th an­niver­sary of an­thracite coal min­ing. The li­brary also re­leased its Sum­mer Learn­ing Quest sched­ule as fol­lows: 11 a.m. Mon­days math for kids (preschool and el­e­men­tary ages) June 18-23; 11 a.m. Tues­days read­ing sto­ry­time for preschool and el­e­men­tary ages, Tues­day-Aug. 7; 6 p.m. Wed­nes­days science nights for el­e­men­tary ages now through Aug. 7. Other fea­tures in­clude: Wed­nes­day, Take Apart Day; June 27, Sound and Light Physics; July 11, Mar­tian Ma­te­ri­als space rock pro­gram; July 18, Tin Foil Sculp­ture; July 25, Pottsville STEM pro­gram; Aug. 1, Cameron’s Ex­otic An­i­mal pro­gram.
