Ac­tive shooter drill to be held at PGA

PINE GROVE — The Pine Grove Area School Dis­trict will hold an ac­tive shooter emer­gency drill Tues­day.

Su­per­in­ten­dent Heath W. Ren­ninger told the school board Thurs­day a dis­trictwide no­ti­fi­ca­tion was sent out alert­ing fam­i­lies of the event. The dis­trict will be us­ing the ALICE sys­tem: Alert, Lock­down, In­form, Counter, Evac­u­ate. The drill will be held in the high school, mid­dle school and el­e­men­tary school through­out the day and will in­clude stu­dents and staff.

Ren­ninger stressed that no weapons will be used dur­ing the drill.

“We’re us­ing this as a teach­ing ex­pe­ri­ence,” he said.

In other busi­ness, the board, by an 8- 0 vote, ap­proved pur­chas­ing a new se­cu­rity gate with a man­ual key fob sys­tem at a cost not to ex­ceed $ 5,000. The gate will be placed be­tween the el­e­men­tary build­ing and the play­ground, Ren­ninger said.

Di­rec­tor Wes Ney was ab­sent. Also get­ting the nod was a new switch and no­ti­fi­ca­tion alarm sys­tem at the high school at a cost not to ex­ceed $ 5,000.

The school dis­trict will be sav­ing al­most 50 per­cent with its new copier con­tract ap­proved by the board. Tech­nol­ogy board Chair­man Don­ald E. Brown said the four- year con­tract is with Ed­wards Busi­ness Sys­tems and would pro­vide copiers to be used in each of the fac­ulty rooms and the spe­cial ed­u­ca­tion of­fice for a to­tal cost of $ 64,565.76. Un­der terms of the con­tract, copies are un­lim­ited and sta­ples are in­cluded.

High School Prin­ci­pal Michael Jan­i­celli in­tro­duced se­niors of the month Michaela Witherow and Ni­cholas Brown. Mid­dle School Prin­ci­pal Melissa Mekosh in­tro­duced the eighth- grader of the month, Ash­ton Owens. An­other eighth- grader of the month, Jazmin Guillen, was un­able to at­tend Thurs­day’s meet­ing, Mekosh said.

In other ac­tion, the board ap­proved:

• Start­ing a Rho Kappa So­cial Stud­ies Honor So­ci­ety with Mon­ica Breiner as ad­viser.

• Start­ing a Pine Grove Area Chap­ter of Quill and Scroll In­ter­na­tional Honor So­ci­ety for high school jour­nal­ists with An­drea Hat­ter as ad­viser.

• Ali­son Gimbi as the new high school guid­ance coun­selor at a salary of $ 42,433. Gimbi at­tended the meet­ing and was wel­comed to the dis­trict.
