Schuylkill to debut 8- team playoff format
The Schuylkill League will unveil its new eight- team playoff bracket in girls’ vol
leyball Monday at two locations.
Unlike prior years’ fourteam playoff consisting of only division champions, the
league’s four division runners- up will also compete in the expanded format.
The playoffs begin with a pair of quarterfinal doubleheaders Monday at two sites.
At Minersville’s Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium, Division III champion Halifax will oppose Division II runner- up Jim Thorpe at 5: 30 p. m. Division I champion Pottsville will face Division IV runner- up Mahanoy Area 30 minutes after the first quarterfinal’s conclusion.
At Lehighton, Division II winner Panther Valley will face Division III second- place Millersburg at 5: 30 p. m. The second match will pit Division IV champion Nativity against Division I runner- up Blue Mountain.
The semifinal doubleheader will be held at 5: 30 p. m. Wednesday at Minersville. Those winners will vie for the Schuylkill League championship at 7 p. m. Thursday at Martz Hall.
North Schuylkill 3 Shenandoah Valley 1
SHENANDOAH — Terra Stravinsky had five kills, 26 assists, nine service points, two aces and 22 digs to lead North Schuylkill to a 15- 25, 25- 15, 25- 19, 25- 16 triumph over Shenandoah Valley.
Angel Farrone had five kills, two assists, 10 service points and 17 digs for North Schuylkill ( 1- 16). Katrina Hillbish had 25 digs for the
Spartans in the victory.
Victoria Donovan had six kills and 14 digs for Shenandoah Valley ( 4- 14). Abby Conroy had eight kills, Rachel Roguskie had six kills and Emily Demalis had 22 assists.
North Schuylkill won JV 2- 0.
Shamokin 3 Tri- Valley 1
HEGINS — Myah Wehry had 10 kills and Matilda Risso posted 15 assists for TriValley in its 25- 21, 25- 18, 20- 25, 25- 20 loss to Shamokin in a Twin Valley Conference match.
Faith Colahan had four aces and nine digs for the Bulldogs ( 4- 14). Caitlin Weav- er had five digs and four aces, while Casey Mcnally had nine digs.
Tri- Valley won JV 2- 1.
Upper Dauphin 3
MIFFLINTOWN — Upper Dauphin defeated Juniata 25- 19, 25- 17, 25- 23 in a Tri- Valley League match.
Upper Dauphin finished its regular season at 14- 6 and will enter the District 3 Class A playoffs.
Jim Thorpe 3 Weatherly 0
JIM THORPE — Jim Thorpe defeated Weatherly in a non- league match.
Set scores and match details were not reported.
Jim Thorpe improved to 13- 4, while Weatherly ended its season at 3- 17.
Lourdes’ match date switched
COAL TWP. — Lourdes’ scheduled non- league match against Sugar Valley Rural Charter was moved to 12: 15 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 20.
College Women PSU- Brandywine 3 PSU- Schuylkill 0
MEDIA — Chloe Readinger had five kills and seven digs for Penn State Schuylkill in its 25- 13, 25- 11, 25- 22 loss to Penn State Brandywine in a Penn State University Athletic Conference match.
Alyssa Hatter added two digs and six digs for the Lions ( 5- 15, 4- 4 PSUAC East). Alexis Breslin had three kills and four digs. Noel Kaufman and Alyssa Hatter each had two kills and six digs.
Hannah Sarafinas had 12 kills for PSU- Brandywine.
