Psychic Monica a Manayunk mainstay

MANAYUNK » For nearly 30 years, Psychic Monica has been a staple in Manayunk, providing guidance to those seeking advice or answers to life’s toughest questions.

Monica Johnson is a fifth-generation adviser and spiritual healer whose services include palm readings, tarot card and angel readings, crystal and meditational healing, life coaching, chakra cleansing, spiritual healing and medium and pet readings.

People come to Psychic Monica with all types of questions, often relating to their careers, love lives or major life events like moving to a new city. Sometimes people need spiritual guidance and healing, or they just want to know, in

general, what their future holds. Many come to her just for fun or out of curiosity.

“We all need guidance at one point or another,” Johnson said.

Johnson has been operating the business, located at 4388 Main St., for nearly three decades. It all started with her grandmother, who emigrated to Philadelphia from Budapest and who used to perform coffee readings for her clients. The family business lives on today through not only Johnson, but also her daughters, who do readings as well.

“It’s a gene,” Johnson said of the abilities that have been passed down in her family for generations.

She explained that every woman possesses intuition and insight, but some have it stronger than others.

“Sometimes it’s a gift; sometimes it’s a curse,” she added.

Each service offered by Psychic Monica will tell a cli- ent something slightly different. Johnson explained that palm readings help to give a client insight about themselves and their character. For more specific information about the future, tarot card or angel readings are tools that can be used to help address those unanswered questions. Tarot cards help determine what the future will hold, while angel readings involve using angel cards to read energy and tell of a past life and what angels surround the person.

Over the years, people and their situations have mostly remained unchanged, Johnson said. One difference she has noticed is that there has been an increase in male clients, particularly in the last decade. She credits men today as being more open minded and more willing to spend time taking care of themselves.

Johnson has many repeat clients, some who have been seeing her for years. In fact, the children of some of her grandmother’s clients are now her clients. Most people hear about Psychic Monica through word of mouth. In recent years, with the help of the internet, she has seen clients from all over, including many tourists. Johnson also used to host a live show on Q102, so many locals know her — and recognize her voice— from her days on the radio.

Of working with clients over the phone, she said, “It took awhile to get the energy there, but it worked.”

In person, she can feel her client’s energy and spirit, which makes it easier to make a connection. A client’s attitude can have an effect on a reading, too. If someone comes to Johnson for a reading but doesn’t have an open mind about the process, Johnson says, it will be more difficult to do the reading.

“It makes my job harder,” she said.

She recommends that anyone who is curious or anyone who has something big going on in their life — a question or a decision — consider having a reading done. The results may be of benefit.

“Throughout life, there’s turns and twists everywhere,” Johnson said. “You’ll need guidance, advice and consulting.”
