WorkReady summer program wraps up
MANAYUNK » Maleah Leslie, a rising high school junior at Eastern Academy Charter School and a returning participant of the Philadelphia Youth Network’s summer jobs program on behalf of WorkReady hosted at North Light Community Center, has demonstrated perseverance this summer.
After being placed as an intern at Learning World Child Academy in Germantown, Leslie said she felt slight apprehension, having never worked with infants and toddlers before, but since then, she has excelled by grasping her own sense of leadership skills and taking initiative, according to her supervisor.
“Maleah has been a great asset to our team this summer,” said Dekota Dandy, Leslie’s supervisor. “She learns quickly and is attentive to the children’s needs. Parents even request and
praise Maleah’s presence. Our staff is really lucky to have her.”
Leslie, who is 16, also took her first college-level summer course at Community College of Philadelphia while participating in her summer job.
“Taking courses at CCP gave me an example of what the demands of future college life will be like because I got to interact with professors and complete higher level assignments,” she said.
While juggling to manage this summer’s task of both school and work, Leaslie expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by WorkReady, which enabled her to explore a new career option that she had never considered before. She also expressed she is grateful for the built-in professional development curriculum that WorkReady offers to youth because she now knows the value of effective workplace communication, professionalism and finance management for when she enters the job market.
As the summer comes to an end, Leslie said she has developed bonds with each and every child at Learning World Child Academy and is now open to pursuing and considering other careers in the child care sector.
