LAS VEGAS » After leaving no doubt who was the best light heavyweight around, Andre Ward talked about securing his place as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world and perhaps even one day moving up to heavyweight.

The talk in Sergey Kovalev’s camp, meanwhile, was about protesting the outcome of Saturday night’s fight because the referee did nothing about borderline low blows that helped bring the fight to an end in the eighth round.

Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva, said she would protest to the Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday to try and erase the second straight loss Kovalev suffered at the hands of Ward. Duva admitted, though, she has little hopes a protest would succeed.

“We have to try,” Duva said. “He was hitting him low the whole fight.” LOUISVILLE, KY. » Katina Powell says she is “so sorry” about the fallout of the sex scandal that resulted in sanctions against Louisville’s basketball program, but adds that her experience was “worth surviving.” In her 2015 book, “Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen,” Powell alleged that former Cardinals staffer Andre McGee hired her and other dancers to strip and have sex with recruits and players. Several investigations followed, including one by the NCAA that resulted in Thursday’s decision to suspend coach Rick Pitino and levy other penalties against Louisville. The NCAA described the activities as “repugnant.” Powell reiterated that money was her sole motivation for writing the book during a nearly hour-long Facebook Live interview on Saturday with comedian Jason English that was later removed. She says everything “was very well worth it.” OMAHA, NEB.» Greg Deichmann drove in the go-ahead run during a wild eighth inning and LSU won its 17th straight game with a 5-4 victory over Florida State in the College World Series on Saturday night.

Jared Poche’ (11-3) worked 2 2/3 shutout innings in a rare relief appearance, and the Tigers (4917) advanced to a Bracket 1 winners’ game against Oregon State on Monday night. The Seminoles (45-22) will play an elimination game against Cal State Fullerton in the afternoon.

LSU was down 4-3 against FSU starter Tyler Holton (10-3) when a bizarre sequence turned the game in the eighth. Cole Freeman reached on a base hit and Antoine Duplantis singled to right. Three errors on the play allowed Freeman to score, and Deichmann singled against reliever Alec Byrd for the lead.
