Time to make switch from GOP to Democrats

The Saratogian (Saratoga, NY) - - OPINION -

As a lifelong moderate Republican, I was shocked by Donald Trump’s election and dismayed by his ineptness and the widening gap between the GOP’s core values and the president’s statements and actions. This has created a predicament for me with this year’s Malta town noard and supervisor’s election since I had voted the party line for 52 years.

As I listened to this year’s Republican candidates, I waited to hear the repudiation of the Trump administration’s actions. With the exception of some candidate’s positions on immigration (I.E. the wall), I did not hear anything except the Trump party line on issues such as health insurance, economy, foreign relations, gun control, tax reform, etc.

On the Democratic side, however, candidates Bill Breheny and Tracy O’Rourke, expressed the ideals I was brought up with and support. Interestingly, they asked for the voter’s opinions; while the Republicans did not. I have therefore determined that this year I will break with tradition and enroll as a Democrat.

I encourage other disaffected Republicans to do what I am doing, listen to the candidates and then make up your mind. Robert Sweet Round Lake
