ON THE COVER
Featured on the cover this month is horse trainer Danele Durham and one of the horses she is currently training at Oaklawn Park.
As a trainer, Danele compares herself to a head coach. Her job is to line up all of the people that make the team complete to train the horses — the veterinarians, the jockeys, assistant trainers, horseshoers and others. She has been training racehorses full time since 2006, when she returned back to work after taking a few years off to raise her family.
Danele comes from a family of horse-lovers; her father, a hall of fame trainer whose horse was the last one to win the Triple Crown until American Pharaoh did, owned race horses growing up and in the mid-1980s Danele became “hooked on the racetrack.”
Danele said she hopes one day to be able to run year-round at Oaklawn Park.
