Close defeats add to Tigers’ losing streak
ALVA, Okla. — The Ouachita Baptist Tigers came up short in two tightly-contested games Saturday as their losing streak moved to 15 games.
Northwestern Oklahoma State (20-22, 12-15) shut out the Tigers (10-32, 6-21), 9-0, in the series opener on Friday. Ouachita battled the Rangers in the final two games of the series, but fell 8-5 and 3-2.
The Tigers pounced first in the top of the first inning of the first game on Saturday. Senior left fielder Jakahari Howell, of Arkadelphia, reached base on an error to lead off the game.
Howell reached third base after senior first baseman Kyle Alexander, of Conway, singled to left field. Senior catcher Austin White, of Arkadelphia, plated Howell with a single to third base.
Luis Mendoza tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single through the gap between first and second base. The Rangers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Jorin VanAmstel single to center.
The lead increased to 5-1 before the Tiger offense struck again. White came through with his second RBI of the afternoon with a double down the left field line. A few batters later and White scored on error by Northwestern to make the score 5-3.
Alexander and senior third baseman Preston Speers, out of McKinney, Texas, each had RBI knocks in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
Northwestern answered in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 6-5 lead. The Rangers tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
White was the top offensive option for the Tigers in game one. He went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs.
Junior starter Adam Bahloul (1-5), of Maumelle, threw 158 pitches in seven innings.
VanAmstel hit an RBI double to left field to put the Rangers on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning of the second game.
The game stayed 1-0 in Northwestern’s favor until the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, freshman catcher Cade McBride, from Prosper, Texas, picked up an RBI as freshman third baseman Tyler Riebock, of Rockwall, Texas, scored to tie the game at 1-1 after reaching base on a walk.
The Rangers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs to lead 3-1.
Junior shortstop Aaron Studdard, of Denton, Texas, grounded out in the seventh inning, but McBride scored on the play to make the score 3-2.
Tyler Duck (0-7), from Flower Mound, Texas, threw 112 innings in six full innings.
Ouachita fell to 6-7 in one-run games this season. The 15-game losing streak began with a 6-5 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State (18-22, 13-14) on March 23.
The Tigers are scheduled to be back at home at Rab Rodgers Field today with a 2 p.m. start time against the University of the Ozarks (15-15). The Eagles are sixth out of 13 teams at 10-8 in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference.
