Close de­feats add to Tigers’ los­ing streak

ALVA, Okla. — The Oua­chita Bap­tist Tigers came up short in two tightly-con­tested games Satur­day as their los­ing streak moved to 15 games.

North­west­ern Ok­la­homa State (20-22, 12-15) shut out the Tigers (10-32, 6-21), 9-0, in the se­ries opener on Fri­day. Oua­chita bat­tled the Rangers in the fi­nal two games of the se­ries, but fell 8-5 and 3-2.

The Tigers pounced first in the top of the first in­ning of the first game on Satur­day. Se­nior left fielder Jaka­hari How­ell, of Arkadel­phia, reached base on an er­ror to lead off the game.

How­ell reached third base af­ter se­nior first base­man Kyle Alexan­der, of Con­way, sin­gled to left field. Se­nior catcher Austin White, of Arkadel­phia, plated How­ell with a sin­gle to third base.

Luis Mendoza tied the game at 1-1 in the bot­tom of the sec­ond in­ning with an RBI sin­gle through the gap be­tween first and sec­ond base. The Rangers took a 3-1 lead in the bot­tom of the third, thanks to a Jorin VanAm­s­tel sin­gle to cen­ter.

The lead in­creased to 5-1 be­fore the Tiger of­fense struck again. White came through with his sec­ond RBI of the af­ter­noon with a dou­ble down the left field line. A few bat­ters later and White scored on er­ror by North­west­ern to make the score 5-3.

Alexan­der and se­nior third base­man Pre­ston Speers, out of McK­in­ney, Texas, each had RBI knocks in the sixth in­ning to tie the game at 5-5.

North­west­ern an­swered in the bot­tom half of the in­ning, tak­ing a 6-5 lead. The Rangers tacked on two in­sur­ance runs in the bot­tom of the eighth in­ning.

White was the top of­fen­sive op­tion for the Tigers in game one. He went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs.

Ju­nior starter Adam Bahloul (1-5), of Maumelle, threw 158 pitches in seven in­nings.

VanAm­s­tel hit an RBI dou­ble to left field to put the Rangers on the score­board first in the bot­tom of the first in­ning of the sec­ond game.

The game stayed 1-0 in North­west­ern’s fa­vor un­til the top of the fourth in­ning. With the bases loaded and one out in the in­ning, fresh­man catcher Cade McBride, from Pros­per, Texas, picked up an RBI as fresh­man third base­man Tyler Riebock, of Rock­wall, Texas, scored to tie the game at 1-1 af­ter reach­ing base on a walk.

The Rangers took the lead in the bot­tom of the fifth in­ning with a pair of runs to lead 3-1.

Ju­nior short­stop Aaron Stud­dard, of Den­ton, Texas, grounded out in the sev­enth in­ning, but McBride scored on the play to make the score 3-2.

Tyler Duck (0-7), from Flower Mound, Texas, threw 112 in­nings in six full in­nings.

Oua­chita fell to 6-7 in one-run games this sea­son. The 15-game los­ing streak be­gan with a 6-5 loss to South­east­ern Ok­la­homa State (18-22, 13-14) on March 23.

The Tigers are sched­uled to be back at home at Rab Rodgers Field to­day with a 2 p.m. start time against the Uni­ver­sity of the Ozarks (15-15). The Ea­gles are sixth out of 13 teams at 10-8 in the NCAA Divi­sion III Amer­i­can South­west Con­fer­ence.
