Free household waste cleanup on Saturday

- DAVID SHOWERS

Garland County will host a free household waste cleanup day at Cedar Glades Landfill from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

County residents can drop off Class 4 waste at the landfill, 1040 Cedar Glades Road, for no charge. Construction and demolition debris, furniture, appliances, swimming pools, toys, swing sets and other bulky items are examples of Class 4 waste. The landfill said it will also accept TVs, computers and other electronics.

Hazardous household waste materials will not be accepted, and all contractors will be required to pay landfill fees.

County Judge Darryl Mahoney said the county is holding the event to make up for the cancellation of the city of Hot Springs’ Spring Fling. The city places roll-off containers in each of its six city director districts during the annual event. Last month it announced the event would not be held this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I know that’s important to a lot of people to get their place cleaned up,” Mahoney said. “We thought we’d partner up with the city and do it at the landfill. It’s basically identical to what the Spring Fling is, only you’ll have to take it out to our landfill. The COVID has us short on funds, and we hate to put a bunch of people around each other if we don’t have to.”

The county landfill is a Class 4 facility that’s not permitted for degradable waste. Degradable waste the city and county collect is transported to the Saline County Regional Solid Waste Landfill in Bauxite.
