A 20-year-old man is in custody following a two-car crash that took down a traffic signal in Canyon Country early Friday morning.

Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrested the male driver of a black Dodge Charger on suspicion of driving under the influence and for hit and run.

“He is under the legal age of 21 for drinking,” said Lt. Leo Bower of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “He was also charged for DUI with over 0.08 BAC, hit and run and also ‘Zero Tolerance’ because he is under the age of 21.”

The Zero Tolerance Law states that it is illegal for drivers under the age of 21 to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.01 percent or higher.

The crash occurred at 5:33 a.m. between the two cars—a black Dodge Charger and a red Pontiac—at Soledad Canyon Road and Camp Plenty Road.

One vehicle, a red Pontiac, collided with a traffic signal at the corner of the intersection as a result of the crash.

One individual was injured and transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital following the collision, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Once the crash was cleared, the damaged traffic signal continued to slow traffic in the morning and afternoon as drivers paused for a four-way stop at the intersection.

At 4 p.m. repairs were complete on the traffic signal and the light was fully operational before the evening rush hour, according to the city of Santa Clarita.
