Today is Thursday, January 12, the 12th day of 2018 and the 23rd day of winter.

On this date in the SCV: In 1940, The Signal reported that drizzling rain, a windshield wiper which did not work and brakes which failed to hold in the wet were responsible for the rearend collision near the Honor Farm which resulted in the death of sixyear-old Roy Sallee, injuries to his mother Alwida Sallee, his brother, Billy Glenn Sallee, age 2, and Mrs. Grace Underwood, all of the Newhall Ranch. Mrs. Sallee had been in a delicate condition, and a few hours after being brought to the Community Hospital gave birth to a baby boy. The Sallee car had been heading north on U.S. 99 when a tire went flat, and Mrs. Sallee had pulled to the side to wait for help. After about ten minutes a poultry truck driven by William V. Dearing approached from the south and according to Dearing, a car just ahead of him pulled around the Sallee car in which the passengers were sitting. He applied his brakes but they did not work, and the truck crashed into the rear of the Sallee car at between 30 and 40 miles per hour. Little Roy Sallee was dead when the deputies arrived, with Mrs. Sallee in a pitiful condition of shock and hysteria. All the injured were rushed to the Community hospital.
