Exeter sends six to state meet
Shippensburg University, the host of this weekend’s PIAA Championships, hosted the District 3 Track & Field Championships last weekend.
GIRLS >> Exeter qualified more than a handful of athletes to the PIAA Championships with Faith Kehinde and Symone Foster leading the way. Kehinde, a junior, finished sixth in the 3A 400 meter-dash (58.45) to earn a trip to Shippensburg University while Foster placed third in the 100 hurdles (14.75). Kehinde, Averie Foster, Jackie Richards and Sarah Morganti finished third in the 4x400 relay to advance. They’ll be joined by Blair Eckel who was sixth in the javelin (128-9).
Twin Valley’s Kayla Gillen placed third in the 3A high jump (5-3) to qualify for states. The Raiders’ 4x100 relay of Madyson Burns, Abby Hegarty, Jackie Goebel and Natalie Dorsheimer placed fourth (49.58) to reach states. Fleetwood’s Sarah Crissman earned a state spot by placing fifth in the 3A 800.
Oley’s Rebecca Snyder claimed the AA mile in 5:09.17.
BOYS >> Wyomissing’s Joe Cullen claimed four wins – the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and the 4x400 relay – in leading the Spartans to the boys’ Class AA team title.
Runner-up Schuylkill Valley got golds from Joe Jardine (pole vault), Brendan Sparr (long jump) and Dustin Brown (triple jump) while Oley Valley’s Jacob Gieringer took the shot put). Jardine and Brown joined Logan Grauer and Luke Williams in winning the 4x100 relay.
In Class AAA, Gov. Mifflin’s Alex-
ander Ermold placed seventh in the 1,600 in a statequalifying 4:23.74.
Last Monday was the conclusion of the BCIAA Firing Meet after events were postponed by inclement weather on May 13.
Exeter’s Symone Foster won the 100 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles on the way to earning the Jack Hemmig Trophy as the top girls individual scorer. Double-winners Joe Cullen of Wyomissing and Najee Smith of Muhlenberg shared the boys’ honor.
Wilson won the boys and girls team titles. The boys team’s 151 points bested Schuylkill Valley (81), Muhlenberg (64), Wyomissing (54) and Gov. Mifflin (53.5). The Bulldog girls’ 155.5 was ahead of runnerup Exeter (106), Twin Valley (75), Fleetwood (56.5) and Schuylkill Valley (53).
Twin Valley’s Kayla Gillen won the girls’ high jump by clearing 5-5 while Exeter’s Blair Eckel took the javelin with a throw of 121-6. Schuylkill Valley’s Olivia Jenkins, Fleetwood’s Paige Stern and Gov. Mifflin’s Paciely Nunez went 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Jenkins’ 35-0¼ was the winning mark. Another Panther, Abbie Bailey, won the discus with 103-10.
Among the boys, Fleetwood’s Trevor Koenig (javelin) and Schuylkill Valley’s Brendan Sparr (long jump) joined teammates Dustin Brown (triple jump) and Joe Jardine (pole vault) as repeat county champions.
Wilson’s Alex Cluff set a meet record in the 300 hurdles (38.44).
Oley Valley’s Jacob Gieringer won the shot put at 54-11½, more than five feet greater than runner-up Seth Wagner of Fleetwood (49-9½).
