Ex­eter sends six to state meet

Ship­pens­burg Univer­sity, the host of this week­end’s PIAA Cham­pi­onships, hosted the District 3 Track & Field Cham­pi­onships last week­end.

GIRLS >> Ex­eter qual­i­fied more than a hand­ful of ath­letes to the PIAA Cham­pi­onships with Faith Ke­hinde and Sy­mone Fos­ter lead­ing the way. Ke­hinde, a ju­nior, fin­ished sixth in the 3A 400 me­ter-dash (58.45) to earn a trip to Ship­pens­burg Univer­sity while Fos­ter placed third in the 100 hur­dles (14.75). Ke­hinde, Averie Fos­ter, Jackie Richards and Sarah Mor­ganti fin­ished third in the 4x400 re­lay to ad­vance. They’ll be joined by Blair Eckel who was sixth in the javelin (128-9).

Twin Val­ley’s Kayla Gillen placed third in the 3A high jump (5-3) to qual­ify for states. The Raiders’ 4x100 re­lay of Madyson Burns, Abby He­garty, Jackie Goebel and Natalie Dor­sheimer placed fourth (49.58) to reach states. Fleet­wood’s Sarah Criss­man earned a state spot by plac­ing fifth in the 3A 800.

Oley’s Re­becca Sny­der claimed the AA mile in 5:09.17.

BOYS >> Wy­omiss­ing’s Joe Cullen claimed four wins – the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and the 4x400 re­lay – in lead­ing the Spar­tans to the boys’ Class AA team ti­tle.

Run­ner-up Schuylkill Val­ley got golds from Joe Jar­dine (pole vault), Bren­dan Sparr (long jump) and Dustin Brown (triple jump) while Oley Val­ley’s Ja­cob Gieringer took the shot put). Jar­dine and Brown joined Lo­gan Grauer and Luke Wil­liams in win­ning the 4x100 re­lay.

an­der Er­mold placed sev­enth in the 1,600 in a state­qual­i­fy­ing 4:23.74.

Fir­ing Meet

Last Mon­day was the con­clu­sion of the BCIAA Fir­ing Meet af­ter events were post­poned by in­clement weather on May 13.

Ex­eter’s Sy­mone Fos­ter won the 100 hur­dles and was sec­ond in the 300 hur­dles on the way to earn­ing the Jack Hem­mig Tro­phy as the top girls in­di­vid­ual scorer. Dou­ble-win­ners Joe Cullen of Wy­omiss­ing and Na­jee Smith of Muh­len­berg shared the boys’ honor.

Wil­son won the boys and girls team ti­tles. The boys team’s 151 points bested Schuylkill Val­ley (81), Muh­len­berg (64), Wy­omiss­ing (54) and Gov. Mif­flin (53.5). The Bull­dog girls’ 155.5 was ahead of run­nerup Ex­eter (106), Twin Val­ley (75), Fleet­wood (56.5) and Schuylkill Val­ley (53).

Twin Val­ley’s Kayla Gillen won the girls’ high jump by clear­ing 5-5 while Ex­eter’s Blair Eckel took the javelin with a throw of 121-6. Schuylkill Val­ley’s Olivia Jenk­ins, Fleet­wood’s Paige Stern and Gov. Mif­flin’s Pa­ciely Nunez went 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Jenk­ins’ 35-0¼ was the win­ning mark. Another Pan­ther, Ab­bie Bai­ley, won the dis­cus with 103-10.

Among the boys, Fleet­wood’s Trevor Koenig (javelin) and Schuylkill Val­ley’s Bren­dan Sparr (long jump) joined team­mates Dustin Brown (triple jump) and Joe Jar­dine (pole vault) as re­peat county cham­pi­ons.

Wil­son’s Alex Cluff set a meet record in the 300 hur­dles (38.44).

Oley Val­ley’s Ja­cob Gieringer won the shot put at 54-11½, more than five feet greater than run­ner-up Seth Wag­ner of Fleet­wood (49-9½).
