Berks scholastic golf champions
Exeter junior Alex Seelig won the BCIAA boys’ golf tournament championship on Sept. 27 at Blackwood Golf Course with an even-par 105 over the 27-hole event, besting runner-up Chase Miller of Tulpehocken by two strokes.
Seelig shot a 1-under 69 in the morning session, following by a 1-over 36 in the afternoon on the way to the title.
Other medalists included Berks Catholic’s Nick Fioravante (third), followed by Oley Valley’s Conner Gollwitzer, Muhlenberg’s Tyler Kipp and Wilson’s Dylan Audi in fourth through sixth.
Seelig finished second in 2016, behind only Wyomissing’ Nate Menon. He became Exeter’s first boys champions since Berks great Chip Lutz’s second title in 1972.
The Gov. Mifflin boys squad won the team championship, narrowly edging Berks Catholic. The Mustangs won their first team title since 2002.
Gov. Mifflin and Berks Catholic shot matching five-player scores of 414 but the Mustangs held the tiebreaker with their sixth golfer shooting a better score.
While BC was led by bronze medalist Fioravante, Gov. Mifflin’s low shooter was Simon Max, who shot 9-over 79. Jonas Conner and Tristan Updegraff shot 82 while Luke Fagley (85) and Evan Kraft (86) rounded out the top 5. Christian Strohl’s 87 was the tie-breaking score. Girls golf Conrad Weiser’s Olivia Raihl won her third BCIAA girls golf championship on Sept. 25 at Willow Hollow by shooting an 80.
She was followed by Hamburg junior Aly Rentschler and Wyomissing’s Kristy Bell, who both finished two back with 82s.
A Wilson trio finished fourth through sixth with Peyton Karas (87), Megan Ruffing (88) and Rachael Owens (89).
Gov. Mifflin’s Kellie Fink placed 10th with a 100, Berks Catholic’s Hunter Hirneisen was 12th with 101 while Exeter’s Jade Strause placed 13th with a 102 and teammate Katerina Whitman placed 14th with a 103 and was the final qualifier for the District 3 Championships.
